We are strip grazing into long grass and my horse has loads of scabby bites around her face and neck. These become oozy and her hair is falling out. Anyone got any ideas what's causing it and a cure?
Mmmm...... dunno that I would suspect midges in the first instance TBH, coz if so then you'd expect to see other signs of itching on the rest of the body. My traddie has sweet itch and so I know what to look for basically!!
IF you suspect midges being the culprit here, then I'd be inclined to try a fly mask or fly fringe on the horse (just for the daytime) and see if that improves the situation at all.
Perhaps there is some critter lurking in the grass which is coming out and biting your horse?? Or possibly an allergy. Possibly it IS midge bites; in which case you may have to get a fly and/or sweet itch hoody rug to cover up the horse.
As far as treatment is concerned: I'd be inclined to get some Neem oil and very gently apply it to the sores. Neem has got two fantastic properties: firstly it will help to heal and rejuvenate damaged skin and secondly it will strongly discourage anything else from biting!! (it stinks).
Probably midgy bites and she has been rubbing her face to relive the itch.Similar case with our sweet itch lad who has the rug on but his face still gets bitten. If he hasnt had the neem oil on for a couple of days he is back to rubbing away at his face.
