Unbelievably having been around horses for the last 20+ year I have never had a horse who has actually tied up.

Av is usually out 24/7 but due to her looking less like an ex racer and more like a whale she has been coming in for a few hours in the day with hay. I have been away for the weekend so she went out all day yesterday and was last ridden Friday eve.

Took her into the school to lunge tonight and she was on great form for about 20 mins. I did give her a loose warm up but she was being a prat to be fair. She then almost looked lame/ stiff behind and I couldnt work out if I was being OCD or not. My friend came and had a look and by then she was mega stiff behind, so we put her into her stable with a rub on and called the vet. :( He said that he would come and sedate her if she was panicing, but she was actually quite calm- just looked confused. He said to give her some bute and see what she looked like in the morning. I gave her some dalion, left her to calm down for an hour and went back. She was much happier and eating, not sweating but she was very reluctant to move one of her hind legs.

She is fully weight bearing but doesnt want to move it. I am so unbelievably worried- any tying up info would be gratefully recieved

She may well have tied up. PF tied up for the first time after 8 years of ownership and it was blimmin' scary even though it wasn't a bad attack. Best thing to do is give them rest. Have you changed her diet at all? Any idea what the trigger could've been? In my case YO changed the feed (PF on full livery) Also, and I don't mean to alarm you, but horses that tie up can also show signs of colic in the next few days. This also happened to PF (mild) a couple of days later and vet said the 2 were definitely connected.

A blood test will still be useful in the morning. CK (a muscle enzyme) will be elevated for around a week, AST (a different muscle enzyme) for even longer.

Yes agreed .(just thinking about the call out charge rather than the effectiveness:D)

You need to keep the horse warm, massage the hind quarters twice daily gently with a tenis ball. Cut out any heating feed, stick to high fibre.

I walk my horse for 20 mins before anything else, and cool down for 10-15 depending on what I've been doing, he's 32, we don't do alot but I make sure I do this every time I ride.

You need bloods taken to measure whatever they measure to establish when its safe to ride/turnout etc. If it was only mild, no sweating, shaking etc just go by the advice of your vet

When my horse had it (2003) 1st he was kept in and only allowed to walk one circuit round the yard then back in.

When I was allowed to ride, it started as 15 mins increasing by 5% every day until I got to 45 mins then I introduced some trot.

He then had it VERY mildly after another episode where I was walking him out on hack, a dog frightened him and he started prancing, it was only about

10 mins into the ride so he tied up. Kept him in a few days on the advice of the vet then turned him out before riding him gently say a week later. He has not had it since using my warm up and cool down regime, touch wood

Brilliant- thanks for the replies! She is moving nicely today, although im guessing that the bute will still be masking any discomfort. I debandaged and walked her round the yard a couple of times and she was very disgruntled to be put back into her stable!! I have also called the vet to get him to hopefully come out and take bloods so we can establish the severity etc and form a plan of action :-)

In terms of causes I think, having googled intensely!! that it is prob a combination of factors. She is very fit and her routine is that she is in in the day for a few hours and out at night. Im thinking that leaving her out all weekend on rich grass probabally didnt help also not riding her (damn those weddings!). She may also be coming into season and she is a hot little TB. She also maybe got a little cold in the stable yesterday as we did have a chilly breeze and she cant wander round the stable in the same way- and then of course she was a loon in the indoor school.

PF- I will certainly look out for colic, I have been religiously taking away droppings so that I can monitor the fresh ones!!

Thanks for the replies- honestly, horses are ridiculous animals!, I think that I need a less stressful hobby....maybe embroidery?:D

It would most probably be the fact she is fit, had time off then was a loon, thats why they call it monday morning sickness, when fit horses are given a day off on a sunday (say after a days hunting on sat) then worked on a monday, make sure you allow enough time to warm up and cool down

Bloods taken at lunchtime and classic enzyme elevation. Week of rest/ building her back up quietly, so no major drama- just scary as she hasnt done it before.

Noisy- thanks, the stupid this is that I am conscientous about warm up and cool down but I will have to become OCD about it!- thanks for the help and advice. :D

well av good job you got it right a lot of people wouldn't know!! i think she wants to have babies!!!and she hates being predictable or maybe she wants to be a hunter or maybe a pet??!!
