Anywhere really, but those of you in Aberdeenshire - what is it?

My friend has her horse on Grass livery where mine is on Working and she has just been charged - on TOP of the grass livery - £80 for haylege.

In this field are now all the horses - liveries and WL, and school ones. So about 15 in total.

When I went up just before xmas there were about 9 in there but they had to move them all over because of the snow.

Now a price for haylege was not agreed or given before the winter. And my freind is thinking that they are only charging the liveries for haylege, and not the school horses, as she thought it was about £20 a bale, so he is getting 1 bale a week, and they certainly aren't putting in 15 bales a week to the field. She has so far seen 4 go in last sat, and she herself helped put 4more in today. They go into those ring feeder things so arent completely trampled into the ground.

There is however no grass, so they do need something.

Its going to be a big issue for me tho if I have a £80 charge as I haven't budgeted for it so they will have to get it over the next few months........and there is nothing I can do about it.

Yes that's what I call a large round bale

I wish someone down here would make medium size bales!!! It's a large round bale (or square) or feed bag size bales that cost £6 a bag!

We feed 500kg bales and 2 bales lasts 8 horses 7 days at £20.00 a bale - bargain!! We feed both in the field and in their stables. So with 16 horses 4 bales should be ample £80.00 per week in total!!

At J place our lot (9 horses) are really going through haylage at the moment 3 big bales per week.Usually 30 - 50 quid per month but thats for 3 (1 stabled,2 out).God £80 per horse would kill me!

TequilaMist - Thats for about 3 large horses, some(about 8) Med ones and then a few ponies.

They make their own haylege, but not all of it, I think they have to buy some in.

Thing is that I can see how 1 bale would do 2 horses.

Sashpip - by their calculations it would have costed £720 for the haylege for January...........4 bales per horse, 1 per animal per week.

We're paying £25 for a large round bale and it's lasting 5 horses 5 days, so about £7 a week on hayledge per horse. That's adlib hayledge (no grass) but with a very good feeder so next to no waste.

So £80 a month is extortionate! There is no WAY the average horse could manage a large round bale (5ft bales) by itself in a week! However if it's £80 for the winter that's very cheap and shouldn't complain incase they up the price

Well my friend said it just says Jan Haylege on the bill. They did have a ring in the field in December, but not sure when it was put in as it wasnt mentioned on her bill then. They have confirmed it is £22.50 per Bale.

Will need to see what comes of friend talking to YO about it.

I get a bit crabit about things like this as my boy is fussy, and he will not eat ruined hay/haylege, and from when i was up the other day it does seem like a bit of a mud bath round the rings (15 horses in a low lying prone to being waterlogged field)

Her horse will be going through about a bale every 3 weeks for a large bale, poss even longer. I do not know a single horse who could manage to eat a whole bale in a week!

I'd be furious if I was charged that much a month! She needs to get the YO to give her the workings - like you I suspect she's paying for the school horses share too!

Not quite a bale each, but our two lads easily demolish a large round bale in a week.

£80 for 1 horses haylage bill seems excessive to me. We make our own haylage so costs roughly £12 per large round bale. I get through at least 2 per week for 5 horses. My old haylage supplier is charging £25 this winter so even at his price its still only £40 pm
