How much do you pay for a freelance instructor to come to you to teach on your premises/hired arena on your own horse for an hour or so? Been quoted £50 for my 7yr old for a lesson and not sure if that is the going rate or not (we currently pay a lot less at a yard with a non qualified person!) We are in Herefordshire, Thanks x

A 7 yr old shouldnt really need much more than 30 to 45 mins for an individual lesson.

That said, the cost of a coach really does depend on their (the coach) experience and capability.
I don't have coaches to my yard but box out, cost varies quite considerably from £25 to £60+ for 45 mins. Sometimes I do arena hire plus get a coach in too, but if doing this then I share with similar friend or 2 to spread the cost.

A friend has a weekly session at her yard, pays £10 more than I do with same coach.
I box to the coach, friend has to cover travel.

OP, take care with using a person who isn't qualified, indeed there are some damned good ones with no qualifications, but please please ensure that they at least have liability insurance for coaching.

TBH I don't think there's a going rate. If your child is in PC I'd ask around for recommendations and an idea of what they pay. I'd check that anyone that you use is properly insured.
She is, we are moving areas though so unsure of the rates where we are going to...will contact the branch perhaps thanks x

I am paying £50 for an hour, but I think it is too little as she is quite brilliant and has to travel quite a way!
I find instructors you really click with for regular lessons and enjoy quite difficult to find, so I think it may be time for a pay rise!!

Sometimes they have a minimum amount of time they will come for to make it worth their while.

Average price here is 25 for 30 minutes but she will not come for 30 minutes shortest time she will do is an hour unless iseveral liveries want a lesson and can be back to back then she will do 30 minute slots.

For instructor who is on site I pay £15 for 30 minutes but she is already working as a groom on the yard just fits it in around her other tasks. We have several visiting instructors who come to the yard but quite a few of us now use this instructor who is also a groom as it is much easier to book her and she knows the horses and will also do riding as well.

I think 45 minutes schooling is enough for any horse but instructor wise I go on what I need at the time.

I've had really good dressage lessons for £40 for 40 mins and loved them but sometimes it's not what I need.

I needed a softer approach and felt I didn't need that long or such an intense lesson so have adjusted that and felt happier and it's worked out that I can have 2 short lessons twice a week.

I pay £30 for an hour, instructor comes to my yard & teaches a few of us in separate sessions.
7yr old child or pony, not sure if I've read right. In both instances, breaks & talking through stuff are important.
If you're in the North Nottingham area, I would be very happy to recommend her.

Thats a bit like me a livery next door to me helped me when I was so nervous she only charged me £20 and often she would ride my horse for 15 minutes then I would get on and I needed babying on him. She has helped me so much and I felt she never really pressured me and she knew my horse.

Thanks all, I've spoken to a couple who as you suggested would do shorter lessons for less but need other people to teach to make it worth their while which is fair enough. It's a small yard and I don't think there are others there that have lessons so it's tricky. I've hopefully found one lady who will possibly come out and she's charging £25 for 40 minutes ish. She's insured etc so will give her a try x

I pay £50 for 45 minutes from trainers who ride at GP, at their own arenas. But why are the prices for low level group pole work or jumping sessions so high? £30+ when there are 4 or more in the class seems very toppy.

The lady who quoted £50 is a 4* eventer (not that we need this for a 7yr old! She was just someone reasonably local who can do it!) She'd charge less if there were more to teach...its not feasible for us though. Have found a local PC coach who can hopefully do it for £25 x

I pay £40 and this is for however long the horse needs (she does have a fair journey getting to me).

Trainer has ridden at GP with 30+ years experience, for context.

Be careful using Pony Club - round here there was a dreadful rider who couldn't pass her BHS stages (she was so bad).
The Pony Club hired her to do their summer schools.
I had the misfortune to watch her teach a 'XC schooling session' where 5 of the children had bad falls - she told them not to tell anyone (there were no parents present).
So check qualifications - look on the BHS register.

There’s a freelance instructor near me who’s a HSI Level 2 Coach and has done very well in dressage. She charges 30 for a half an hour and 45 for an hour. Same price for 1 or 4 people (does max of 4 in a lesson) so cheaper the more people. That’s in euros.
I don’t think she charges more or less if it’s hers or your arena
She’s absolutely lovely and always gives you more than the time you paid for

I charge £20/45min or £30/hour and will only do 30 min if i'm already on the yard doing 3/4 other people.

(trained to GP, competed small tour)

I pay £95/45min to an Olympic and European team rider but he stops on a good note so if we do 40 min or an hour etc he doesn't just stop at 45min on the dot which i prefer.

You train a friend of mine and come highly recommended.

I'm on a big yard, so luckily anyone I want to have would usually be teaching other people too. I think it also depends how far they are travelling. The rates I'm aware of at my yard range for £20-60 for 45 mins ish.

I’m surprised at that as to instruct at pony club you need to be on the instructors database and to get on to it you require accreditation (to be retaken every 2 years), first aid, DBS and safeguarding. There exceptions for one off but this is for people who either have UKCC3 or above or are riding at a high level

I was more horrified than surprised.
Trust me, she had no ability, and no qualifications aside from BHS Stage 1. No insurance either.
