How much, in metres, would it take to fence off approx and acre and half field? Getting quotes for fencing, and need to find the average, so will say an acre and 1/2.

JJ still working in feet and inches....

Well...

1acre = 4046 sq metres

Soooo....i'm guessing that approx 8100m would be the perimeter of a 1 acre field

ETS: Ermmm...this isn't as simple as all that

My calcualation is valid for a field measuring 1m x 4046m

For a square field measuring 64m x 64m then the answer is about 256m

I think Rambo's right actually, I worked it out for a 200m by 20m field, and that gives 440m, but it would be cheaper to make the field square lol

If you measure your field. Take big steps which should be roughly a metre. Dont forget the gate post need putting in which cost MONEY! Someone who knows what they are doing is always going to make a better job than you so worth payying someone.
Good luck and dig deep (in your pockets i mean)

JJ, have you, or someone else, got a Quad or anything like that? Drive around the perimeter and measure it that way. I couldn't possibly work it out from figures alone, I can't even help the child with her homework

There you are! That's it! Give the figures to a child! Problem sorted.

That's what we did (the quad, not the child) almost gave OH a heart attack when we worked out how many posts we would need just for one 700m pasture.

I think we will get the fencing company to walk around, because of costs we will have posts put in then use eleccy tape and do rails as and when.
The field is 7 and 3/4, which will be split into 4, so going by the measurements here, it will be endless money!

Make sure that when they put the posts in they concrete every third one in. As regards the rails paint the posts and rails before the fence is erected and drill holes in to the rails rather than nail straight in as this will prevent them from splitting. Always use heavy duty rails and if possible put equi-fencing over the post and rail to stop the horses kicking through the post and rail. Also remember that as a result of a recent court case it was declared that horse owners are responsible for any accident caused by horses escaping (whoever is at fault) so you need to ensure that you have third party liability insurance in excess of £10,000,000.
