Average rider?

I'm quite shocked atthe level of riding people class as an average rider. I know literally hundreds of riders and a mere handful can ride up to that standard of a med test, or jump 1.10.
Average to me is the majority. Most riders are leisure riders and one or two horse owners and most lack the ambition to get to that level, not can't but don't want to.

Actually the majority in the sense you mean is the median - the middle value where most people are. The average is... well.. more complicated to consider in riding ability sense.

I think the average point would be lower than that too - or different anyway. It seems rather blinkered to consider it purely in terms of being able to do something like that - I know people who can and do regularly both of the above, but are little more than passengers. I certainly am not average by those specifications either. But then, I've never, ever ridden a horse capable of jumping a 1m10 track. I've never ridden anything schooled to that sort of level either. Maybe that is just the reason why I'm a below average rider, though.

I don't know and don't care what people class me as. Me and my horse go out and about doing everything that I want to. We have fun doing it, and are moderately successful too -That's what matters.

I'd say I am distinctly average

I've got 2 sports horses have been riding since I was 5 had lessons on my horse at least montly in the 10 years we have been together and wouldn't dream of doing a Medium test or jumping a 1.10 track - it just doesn't float my boat

I would say, as long as person is capable of handling a horse in any situation (hacking, schooling, jumping, dressage, spooking, bucking etc.) Whether they do it or not is average, even if it scares you, but you are capable of sitting to it and getting back on (unless serious damage has occured :p) is an average rider.

I don't believe someone having ridden RS horses for a year is quite ready for all of that, because those horses have to be safe for people who have never ridden before too, and anyone that has gone from an RS setting to having their own horse will realise how different having horse that isn't just 'following the one in front' is.

The description used (1m10 track, med dressage) I think is a little high, for example, I can jump a 1m10 track (though I'm more happy sticking to about 1m :) ), given the horse is also capable of doing such things, but couldn't and wouldn't want to do a medium dressage test. I've been to PC and RC and I've always been up there with the decent riders from anyone's point of view, so to me, I'm an average rider. Possibly a bit rusty after a year off though :p
