I really can't fathom how they arrive at that figure, as there are plenty like me who spend a lot less than that a year. There must be some seriously ugly spenders

That is why it's an average.
Plenty spend more. Very few spend 253 a month. Most spend a lot less or a lot more. They have taken a cross-section of society, including the wealthy, not just the likes of you and me with better things to drain our accounts with... like horses for eg.
I spend about £50-80 a month on clinique face care products, everyday moisturisers, eyebrows done, Estée Lauder makeup (which I very rarely wear), things like toothpaste and mouthwash, shower gels, Bed Head and Paul Mitchell shampoos. This is before my hair cut every 8-12 weeks.
I can see how, with someone who wears makeup religiously, rather than maybe once a fortnight like me, gets their hair done every 3 or 4 weeks, visits the salon for a tan or whatever weekly, buys the best moisturisers and makeup etc, why they could easily spend hundreds of pounds a month.
It can be done on a budget, though. My skin is very important to me, and I fight hard to keep the spots away (I am 25) and a good tone to it. I already have frown lines and my eyelids have drooped due to several years of stressful study, training and work. So I do my best. However, I cannot be bothered with makeup and generally look like a bag lady in jodhs or trackies when I am off work; and when I am at work I wear combats or jeans. I only dress up VAGUELY to go out. I wear good underwear, though - that makes all the difference.

Second the good underwear I make go to John Lewis in Edinburgh every time we are over there to get good bras last one was over 40 quid, but you can see and feel the difference! Unfortunatly I have a stupidly large chest 36 H (which is crazy) and does not make riding without bounce easy but this is probably a whole new thread!
chavhorse and temsik - I wear prima donna bras. I have a fuller chested person and they are one of the only makes I've found to give me support that feels like I am literally wearing scaffolding, but they look so elegant and feminine. Makes a world of difference to how I carry myself (posture) and how I feel - it must make me look better as well (definitely gives you a better outline I think.
WTF?! What kind of beauty products? I suppose I'm lucky to have good skin but I'm not sure I could spend that if I tried! My makeup is used for going out purposes only (so not very often used atm, moan moan) and I've even started trimming my own hair so I suppose Veet, Simple moisturiser, and the odd box of hair dye are my only "luxuries" these days. I buy a tube of Benefit You Rebel Lite, and Georgia powder about once every 2 years, the odd eyeshadow, and eyeliner/mascara every 6 months or so, so my cosmetics probably work out about £50 a year!
I'm 33 and I don't spend any of that on beauty stuff- allergic to it all anyways. Good old soap and water for me and some medical grade moisterizer for my sensitiev skin on my hands! All my money goes on horses, joddies and tack!!
I would say that I buy myself pretty much anything I want in terms of beauty products - I have nice foundation and use Skin Doctors products, which aren't cheap and even fit in fairly regular trims at the hairdresser plus a visit to the local beauty salon once a month to get eyebrows and eyelashes tinted.
Even taking all that into account - there is no way i could spend this amount of money - and if it did take that much just to keep myself looking nice I might be seriously worried! I should add I am significantly older than the age mentioned, therfore by my reckoning I ought to be spending twice as much just to keep the wrinkles at bay.
Perhaps we should include Show Sheen, Hoof Oil, Mane & Tail conditioner etc in our calculations! Maybe they put the decimal point in the wrong place, £2.53 sounds more like my expenditure.
