There's a horse in the field that had locked his jaw around the top of my boy's neck (under the neck piece) earlier and was refusing to let go. He's also been doing it on the neck peice of his rug as well as there was saliva patches all over it. My horse didn't seem distressed, just abit fed up.

There's plenty of food and they have been in the same field together for over 10 months. The horse is a known bully.

Is there anything I could put on the rug to make it less appealing like marmite? I feel like i'm being abit petty but it's the second new rug that has been ripped which I know happens but its so frustrating! :(

I've tried spraying an anti cribbing spray on mine, yum yum I think it is called. Unfortunately it just runs off as the rugs are very waterproof. Mine play constantly and it is the neck piece that gets most of the damage. I'm fed up with constant repairs so if there is something better to put on the rug I'd like to know. Alternatively, when there is enough grass again I will buying my trouble maker a muzzle.

My horse is turned out with my friends horse and I have had 4 rugs ripped above the tail flap and one totally destroyed.

I have repared where possible but my friend replaced the one that was destroyed, it was a lightweight summer rug, no fill. I now use this new rug over top to protect my other rugs and she has said she will replace if/when it gets ripped. It's cheaper than replacing the heavy/expensive rugs.

The damage is only being caused through play and it is usually my boy that starts it!

Don't put marmite on, they'll probably love it :D

I would try spraying anti crib spray onto the neck. My new horse is a bit of a monkey, and I'm going to try doing this too! He's already pulled the velcro neck tab half off my other horses rambo.

Will I get shot down in flames if I suggest

.. Tabasco..?

Without sounding mean, I think he would only have to taste it once and would hopefully never do it again!

Putting an older rug on top would be useful but his no fills have no neck piece attached so it wouldn't make much difference :(

Would it be stupid to contact his owner and ask politely what he hates?

There is a NAF spray and its called something like bite off..?? Not sure but its sold pretty widely from my experience. Small spray with a pink label.

Its really really gross and really helps. I used it last year when my youngster went though a crazy amount of rugs and it did the trick. I have also squirted it on wooden bits that he has chewed and it worked.

When you chuck the rugs over you can get a taste of it in your mouth.. you'll then see why it works!! UGH!

You can buy cribbox stuff for horses' rugs, but dunno what would happen if they were waterproof. I would vote chilli powder/tabasco......

I've had this issue!! Such a pain!! First I tried cribbox which smells sort of like citronella candles & let the pony who was wrecking my boys rugs have a taste but he didn't mind it & actually licked it of my hand so then I went for the NAF spray which doesn't smell but tastes disgusting..I got it in my mouth when I was spraying my boys rugs..I mixed them together & let the pony have a smell & a lick & he hated it so I spray them both on his rugs & seems to have done the trick!! The good thing about the NAF spray is that it's waterproof but the bad thing is tht because it's waterproof it sort of 'decorates' your rugs with spray marks..other than that I'd op for getting a really strong lightweight & put it over the top of all your nice rugs!
