My horse has just had his (slightly late!) booster vaccination. YO has just text me saying vet advised not to turn out as horse may run around and sweat up and not to ride for a couple of days.
I thought this was an old fashioned thing and not necessary with modern vaccines?

My vet gave me his blessing to take my newly injected horse around the farm ride at top speed and told me it would help the vaccine disperse. I have always continued work as normal after a vaccine and never had a problem (one horse allergic to the adjuvant carrier, but nothing to do with working him). Has your vet used a new type of vaccine??

I am a little old school and wouldn't hunt or do serious exercise wihin 48 hours. Saying that I have always understood a little exercise is good and would certainly continue with normal work and turn out.

Currrently we use merial vaccinations and their data sheet doesn't describe any warnings regarding exercise restrictions. http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Merial_Animal_Health_Ltd/documents/S3836.html

However, I generally assume as my arm is stiff following vaccination, so may the horse's msucle be therefore, I tend to recommend owners cut their horses some slack in the work over the following few days.

Thinking regarding exercise was that avoiding strenuous exercise may help to avoid adverse reactions. I personally don't promote strenuous exercise, but I have seen horse that have done so the next day without problem. I suspect it's less of an issue these days, but each horse varies, and so I wonder is it worth the risk of a reaction, or better to reduce the work load for 2-3days?

I grew up being told not to work them after vaccs, i am now told that it is ok to work them. I always still give them a day off, just in case!!:)

Being old school I always give them 24 hours off after boosters and then take it easy for another couple of days but unless the weather is awful they get turned out as normal. This year they had their boosters on Thursday pm, had friday off in the field, went for a gentle hack Sat and Sun and went back in to full work Monday.

My equine vets told me give him the day of the vaccination + 2 days off, or at least only gentle walking. As Imogen says, I hurt after a vaccination so it's probable the horse does too. Walk a mile in your horse's shoes, then decide!

I was told years ago that my pony might "sweat it out" if I rode her too hard after a vaccination - I was told to give her a week off, which really shocked me at the time. Bit of a problem, too - I had PC camp two days after her jab! She was fine though.

My horse now always reacts to her jabs - she gets very stiff and looks down in the dumps for a few days. I always plan to give her a week off and keep her as if she's ill for that week - warm, well-fed, feed her slightly off the floor as she can't reach right down. Vet has said she is happy with this approach and that as it doesn't affect Maiden after a few days off, she's not concerned. Bit of an odd approach, I think - but I trust my vet and my horse is odd and reacts to anything. My point is - I've never been told by this vet to avoid sweating, but then Maiden always has time off.

Interesting. Shame I wasn't with vet so I could ask her at the time! It's not something which has been mentioned to be before as far as I can remember. Although having said that with them always being at this time of year, before now, I would have always been at work til 5 so he would have only worked at the weekend anyway.
Horse has gone out as normal today albeit with a slightly lighter rug as new habit of hooning around at end of day and over heating in rug!
He'll have today off and do something tomorrow - typical that today is apparantly the best day this week weatherwise!

my old vets were happy for me to hack to get jags - i did't go mad on way home and didn't get her sweaty - they were happy with that. i've never really worried tbh

It is an old fashioned idea. I always ride straight afterwards and I always ride the same day as the farriers been, and the following day after teeth rasping. The only time I've haven't ridden after something has been done is when the horse has been freezemarked and then he's had a layoff of 3-5 days.
