Avoiding TBs or any adverts with the word "Potential"..

Have been thinking of a plan as my horse is off with a DDFT injury. If he is to finish his enforced rest period then to have a year off completly in the field I would be one very bored Prittstick.
I would love another horse in the interim or even to keep if he doesnt come back sound, but the only things I can afford are either OTT TBs or crooks from dodgy dealers. Am loathe to buy something I cant sell on if necessary, so would prefer less obscure bloodlines or anything so Irish that it hasnt got a passport.
Friend suggested a youngster from a larger WB dealer, another suggested more TBs...
Do these horses exist or do I need to take my trailer to Germany?!
 
they do exist!!

i got my lil gem from ascot sales in dec for £500

so ok hes had tendon probs in past but sound as a pound!

he hacks ... loads like a star.... can clip him by yourself ..... hes a gem in everyway!

and he has the most amazing paces!!! seriously you'd think u where looking at/sitting on some WB not a TB!

Hes trotted happily over bright poles etc...
 
I've been sharing while mine's recovering. First I had a lovely 16hh 13yo Danish Warmblood gelding to jump and the 19yo Anglo Arab who was being rehabilitated after a ligament injury, then things fell through with those two and I now have a 15.2hh 12yo Anglo Arab and a 15hh coloured cob. It's good as it all fits around uni and although I will miss them when I have to stop when Maiden comes back into work, I know it will be easier for me to stop as I'm not quite so attached. I got to compete the warmblood as well (well ok it didn't last that long and due to various other reasons I only took him out once (but we won)), and I'm trying to get up enough courage to see if I can take the cob hunting before the end of the season and maybe take the AA to RC camp. Maiden's injury has set me back and it's nothing like riding your own horse, but I wouldn't have survived the last god knows hom many months without my share horses. I certainly couldn't have afforded to keep two (even with one on cheap grass livery). I've been putting all my saved money aside into a high-interest account to eventually pay for Maiden's replacement when she finds a loan home.
I was very tempted to buy another straight away but I know I made the right decision in the long run, and would do it the same if I went back to where I was when Maiden started box rest.
So seeing as I have been (am) in a very similar situation, I feel fairly qualified to advise you to consider all your options very carefully, and don't rush into anything! Make sure you'll have enough time, money and motivation for all that boooooring walk work when your horse gets the all-clear!

Im not keen on having other peoples ponies anymore- I put so much effort into any horses I ride and at the end of the day I wont get anything out of it, I would be gutted when it had to go back to its owners and unless you already know the owners Im a bit wary of loaning/sharing.
 
If you get yourself a nic ex racer, get it going in an outline, competing locally you should sell it easily for around the £3.5 mark. I sold one two years ago for £4.5k and she was at intro level, so i wouldnt let that put you off as long as sound and nice conformation, feet etc.
 
Ah hello my DDFT friend, Ive decided to keep him in or in a pen until June-ish and then hopefully the vet will allow me to turn him away for a year.
I saw Robert Smith riding Mr Springfield at Olympia and the commentators said he had been off for 3 years with ligament injury, so Id rather give my horse all the time in the world instead of bringing him back this year as has been suggested.
Its not that I dont have anything to ride, theres always something for me to sit on but its the need to have a goal, an ambition that will get me through the next year and beyond without jacking it all in and just having my darling cripple in a field.
 
I just worry though that if it comes time to sell on that it would be tricky. In this area we are awash with re traineds not selling and pretty average horses go for stupid money.
