Yep! I mix up a concoction of skin so soft, citronella and lavender. Still doesnt work brilliantly but the best ive found yet! I also pour some of the concentrated oils onto my hat silk and numnah as an extra deterrant!
Have seen loads of folk post about citronella. How much do you add? My little herd were been literally eaten alive today. At one point there were 18 clegs on one of the boys.
I'm sure there is a far more scientific way of doing this, but i do the following:
take an empty skooshy bottle (see through) and fill about 1/4 way with citronella oil. i would then add lavender until about 1/3 full. skin so soft until 1/2 - 2/3 full and i fill the rest up with water. obviously the oils separate so you need to give it a right good shake before you use it but i have never had a horse take a reaction to this particular potion! Like i said, it still isnt fantastic but its the best ive come up with!
The SSS dry oil spray is very good at repelling midges, use the green one (Soft and Fresh), even Scottish fishermen use it! You can get Avon online or from eBay sellers if you don't have a local Avon rep.
Its brilliant stuff. Conventional sprays always dry out my girls skin and then she gets all this flaky dead skin in her coat which attracts the flys even more.
Skin so Soft is the only thing which has worked and not caused further skin problems...
Its because of this that I became an Avon Rep!! xx
