Went hunting for the 4th time on my boy today and it was awful. I love hunting but im never taking him again. It was pouring with rain and freezing which ment that my reins were slippy and my hands were numb (i had gloves on too). My boy took advantage of slippy reins and numb hands and tanked off with me past EVERYONE! Heading for the hedges he missed the hedge jumped a ditch and proceeded to gallop flat out through a poor man and his horse (i think he was very important as well

). my whole right side smacked straight into said horse and i nearly came off! managed to then pull my boy up in the middle of one of the farmers fields! I was so embarrassed. So i just stayed well at the back and tried to make my boy semi walk/jog to teah him a lesson that he can not always go in the front and other horses have to pass him without him thinking he is being left

. All in all a pointless, wet, cold, painful day and i am glad to be home.

Don't write off hunting altogether, maybe just pick a better day weather wise next time.

Remember, fore warned is fore armed, so you'll be ready for the little devil next time

My pony was very much like that, hunting was his favourite pastime and he just loved taking hold and tanking off on occassion

He has been awful every time now! I think it is too much hassle with him tbh. Plus i would never ever forgive myself if he got hurt. He is all bandaged up tonight with the thickest bed as im sure he will be exhausted

maybe give him another go when the weather is a little less vile. Some horses just don't get on with hunting though. My old boy just couldn't cope with it at all, and me and him would nearly fall out every time we went out as he would spend all his time spinning around and grinding his teeth

My hunt does loads of fun rides and sponsored rides once hunting has finished. Maybe take him out to some of these to get him out in a group, but with less stress than hunting

What a little monkey your horse is. I agree with quirky don't write off hunting all together. Lucy and i had a terrible first day hunting. For A few seasonds i had been drag hunting her as most of my family are anti. When i moved out i desided to give fox hunting a go and after our first canter everyone else stopped but Lucy couldn't see why so carried on with her head on the floor i had no breaks and no stearing. We overtook everyone including the hounds

. I made my appologys and took Lucy home. I got a new set of breaks, a flash nose band and put a daisy rein on her. The next week i made her stay at the back and i kept going out every time i could. She eventualy settled down at the back. This is the same pony that has whipped in with me, Rounded up many lost hounds, Will jump everything you point her at but if you want her to stay at the back or stand point while the whole field gallops off thats ok to. She has been hunted by kids on and off the leadrein and i can ride her and lead two children on there ponies ether keeping up with the field or holding back depending on what the children want.
It is acheavable but it will not happen over night. Can you try your horse in different tack?

I was a wimp and decided against going out today because of the ice, although OH still went to whip in. Next time try pick a day when the weather is better, and it is an area you know well incase he tries anything.

Don't give up altogether, i've never been hunting, but im sure it's like most things with horses, each time you do it it gets a bit easier. Just keep thinking positive

Sounds like you had a really rotten day. But don't give up, many before you have had the same problems and yes overtaking the Master and hounds you want to bury your head plus the ponys. I'd say join the social side of the hunt get to know the people and you will find you will have loads of fun and find many new friends.
