Awful dilemma re my oldies.

Well, that's a relief, the little darlings have a bit more time together in a safe loving home. They look adorable. This has given you time to think of the time when one needs to be pts, and what is the best thing to do for them.

If they were mine, when that time comes, I would pts both together. It will be very hard for you, but you will not regret it, to me, it's the right thing to do.

Re getting another old pony as companion to the surviving pony, there is no future in this. Where do you stop? You face a lifetime of putting old ponies to sleep and getting new old ponies to keep the surviving one company, it's a never-ending cycle.
 
So glad that it's turned out to be nothing too serious.

With regards to the cut in her vagina - has she been in season and scratching her bum on something??
 
I'm really at a loss to explain how this has happened. Its a good 3 inches in. The only part of their field which is not electrified is the gate which is totally smooth. The cut is too deep to have come from rubbing herself surely. The cut itself is jagged.
 
Our retired oldie had something similar a couple of weeks ago, she'd been kicked by her field companion and it left a small bleeding tear much like the one you describe. She had ABs and is now fine :0)

What is really odd is that nothing is visible on the outside. I only noticed it because there was a small amount of blood at the bottom of her vulva. I then looked inside.

Lets face it how many of us actually look inside their mare's lady bits. I clean the outside (baby wipes are a godsend) but I don't recall ever looking inside. The vet was putting her hand right inside and pulling apart so we could see the cut. I just can't figure it out unless god forbid someone has done something - ughh my mind doesn't even want to go there but I can't help thinking it.

If anyone has and I were to catch them I would stick them through with a pitchfork I swear I would.
 
Our Queenie's damage was internal too, it was only that we saw blood on her legs that we looked... the filly she is out with (unshod luckily) had kicked her, dented the outside but torn the inside, god knows how she managed it.
 
I noticed some blood splashes on my old girl's back legs a few weeks ago, lifted up her tail as everywhere else was fine and ooh heck, what a mess! All swollen, purple and bleeding. I had a poke about inside but didn't want to mess too much and as there have been some injuries to other mares in the field before, decided to whistle up the vet for a proper examination. It turned out to be a bite and just need some steriod gel to calm it down. She'll be missing a piece of labia on a permanent basis though. The horse that must have done it is a bully and has taken chunks out of her all year round. Luckily she is separated from him now. Cost me a pretty penny!
