I’m currently spending the night on the couch because JD’s back end gave way this evening.
She was at the vet yesterday for her diarrhoea as I thought she might be having another bout of pancreatitis. While there, we discussed putting her on another pain relief for her arthritis and the vet suggested Gabapentin, so she started it yesterday.
I noticed yesterday evening on her walk she seemed a bit wobbly behind, but she’d had a car journey to the vet and I thought maybe it was just her arthritis kicking off as she’d jumped out of the car on arrival before I could lift her out.
This morning she seemed back to normal- 2 walks today and marching out as normal. Had her Gabapentin this evening and her back end went quite out of nowhere on the stairs (which she normally manages fine)
I’m on my own at the moment and how I kept the pair of us from falling down them, I don’t know. I managed to get her back downstairs and onto her bed, then she went again. The last time I saw her like this was when she’d had that heavy sedation in the summer and her legs took awhile to reconnect to her brain!
I let her have a lie on her bed for an hour, where she fell asleep. I assumed I was either going to have to take her to the vets tonight or tomorrow morning… then she got up, still a bit wobbly but not as bad and proceeded to wander around the kitchen looking for food.
The only thing that’s changed (aside from the gut binding medication that she has had before) is Gabapentin. I’ve just googled it and it seems ataxia and hind leg weakness is a common side effect. Needless to say I’m not giving her any more and I hope to god she continues to improve by morning.
I’m sleeping here with her as I don’t want her attempting the stairs and I want to be here in case she needs a wee.
She is 14 and a half, and I know her legs will get her one day, but the speed this has happened makes me think it’s the drug. She went from trotting along on a walk to collapsing, in the space of an hour and a half. Has anyone had this happen with this drug?
