Unaffiliated SJ at yard last night, and one of the horses fell, hurt its back and had to be put down. Kind of brings it home to you to make the most of them whilst we have them.
That is awful Sue and I hate to hear of any horses dying like that.
I can still remember seeing a racehorse collapse ( several times) before dying a few feet away from me in the winner's enclosure at a racecourse a few years ago. I was working that day and I was supposed to interview the winning connections ( not of the same horse) the trainer's wife was rude to me and I had, had enough after seeing the horse and not be physically able to do anything and in the end I just walked out of the enclosure in tears ( minus the interview).
Seeing the horse that day still haunts me because I know it suffered before it died because you could see the scrape marks on it's back as it fell on concrete and went over twice before it died
It is an awful way to go, and my thoughts go out to the rider who must be devasted. I did give Pidge extra cuddles this morning. makes you want to wrap them in very large cotton wool doesn't it.
Many years ago, the daughter of a friend of mine was having a flatwork lesson and the mare let out a huge whinny and dropped down underneath her with a heart attack! Mare was only 9 - will never forget as long as I live!!!
God how awful,
I'll never forget years ago at a RC XC when a horse fell and broke its leg. Poor girl, only a teenager and so brave held her poor horse until the vet came and PTS.
