I can barely type, so I'll keep this as lucid as possible.

My husband and I just got back from the emergency animal hospital in Manhattan, after noting that Stella's right eye was very cloudy this morning, and she could barely open it. They diagnosed acute glaucoma. The right eye has a reading of 60 (pros, I'm sure you'll know what that means) while the left is borderline (25). The doctors are taking a drug approach first, to see if they can reduce the pressure, and if that fails, Stella's right eye will be removed toward the end of the week. The opthamologist mentioned that the left eye may follow suit--in weeks or months--but I can't remember whether she said this pertains to primary or secondary glaucoma, as, I'm sure you can imagine, I'm all over the place right now.

I'll continue to update as and when I get news. *Please*, if anyone has experienced this, I'd love to hear your input and stories, good or bad.

I've no experience of glaucoma I'm afraid, but so sorry to hear this news

So very sorry to hear this. I have no experience of glaucoma in dogs, but my old GSD had to have an eye removed at 10 years old due to a tumour. She coped incredibly well with one eye, and we soon got used to her appearance. Sending loads of vibes to Stella that the drug approach works and it doesn't come to this. Hugs to you.

So So sorry to hear this horrible news. You must be devastated. She has a huge personality and I'm sure she will cope in her own special way. Massive vibes to all of you.

Oh no, what an awful shock for you all, hugest hugs to you and Stella.

I hope that the drugs do their job and that she doesn't have to have an operation, please keep us all posted.

With the drugs, the pressure in her right eye has gone down to a reading of 23. The opthamologist will be seeing her in the morning and shall give us feedback. If it continues to remain low, she can come home tomorrow. If it rises back up in a few days, that's when we'll know if she needs to have it removed. If it remains stable, we can manage it at a certain level but the eye will remain cloudy.

We still don't know whether this is primary glaucoma (inherited, progressing to the other eye eventually) or secondary glaucoma (caused by trauma, lens luxation etc., and usually only applicable to one eye)

Will post more tomorrow... Thanks for the continued good thoughts. I'm rather shellshocked this end, and have been thinking odd thoughts all day i.e. I'd rather it was a leg than her beautiful eye/s

My brother in law has had glaucoma for thirty years, and they can offer drugs to reduce the pressure and an op which also helps, no-one has suggested removing his eye at any time..
It is bound to take a few days to see if they work, so don't lose hope.
He reduced his own blood pressure by eliminating salt from his diet and taking more exercise, not sure what you do with a dog.
he has to put drops in several times a day to control the pressure but other wise leads a normal life.
Hugs to you and your dog...

This is what we're hoping for--absolutely. My understanding is that the meds for dogs and not quite as advanced as the ones for humans, but we can only hope. It surely must be a good sign that the pressure in Stella's eye has reduced significantly in a matter of hours.

Poor Stella, I have everything crossed that it is managable with drugs and that it doesn't affect both eyes. xxx

My only experience with glaucoma was in a friends Welsh Springer, unfortunately drugs didn't work so they removed her eye. She managed till the other eye developed glaucoma too and also had to be remove. She was a nervy dog and didn't cope being blind, so was PTS.

Aw Prose I am so very sorry for you and the delightful little Stella

.

My Mum's dog was hit by a ball in her eye and she developed secondary glaucoma. She was given very strong eye drops which although saved the eye, did not save her sight in that eye. She was absolutely fine with only one seeing eye and lived till a ripe old age of 18.

I hope you have better news in the morning. Fingers crossed for darling Stella.

The poor wee woman.

As you know Tinadog had her eye removed just after Christmas due to developing glaucoma in her eye that already had a cataract. Drugs were an option, but the vet said that the pressure within her eye was just too intense and the worry was that she was already in a lot of pain and if it burst the pain would be much more severe.

It was pretty much decided then and there her eye would be removed. She has coped extremely well, but then again she was already almost totally blind in the eye anyway. I can give you more info on the surgery if it comes to that, but I am crossing my fingers that she won't require surgery.

Lots on vibes to one of my favourite HHO dogs and hugs to all of you. I know just how much you love Stella and this must be devastating for you. xx

Husband just spoke to the doctor. Feel completely numb right now.

The eye is going to be removed either today or tomorrow. It's too damaged and painful for either laser surgery or daily drops. At this stage, the vet is 60/40 in favour of it being secondary glaucoma and restricted to one eye; tests in 2-3 days will confirm this either way. She banged her head awfully hard on Saturday and I think this may have a lot to do with it.

Please think of her and hope that it's just the one eye.

Sending Stella loads of vibes and you hugs. As she banged her head it does sound more likely it is secondary glaucoma. When you first see her without the eye it will be a shock, but we soon adjusted to our girls appearance. It healed really quickly and wasn't gruesome to look at or anything. Stella will still be your beautiful girl, just a bit more unique. Will be thinking of you. xx
