Awful Stella news

[ QUOTE ]
When you first see her without the eye it will be a shock, but we soon adjusted to our girls appearance. It healed really quickly and wasn't gruesome to look at or anything. Stella will still be your beautiful girl, just a bit more unique. Will be thinking of you. xx

Did your dog come back to you bandaged up, or was the missing eye side there for all to see? I am dreading all of this, not least the fact that people in NYC are so brazen/rude/inquisitive, and there are just so many of them to confront on our daily walks.

I hope to god it's just one eye. Hubbie and I have very different opinions on what should be done, if it came to that

No she didn't have a bandage. Just stitches and the side of her face was shaved. I was expecting a horrible empty socket but in actual fact when she first came back it just looked like her eyelid had been stitched shut. As it healed the socket did form a hollow but by that time we were used to it. She soon learned to tilt her head slightly and it didn't seem to affect her much at all. We got quite a few people asking what had happened and expressing horror but as far as I was concerned that was their problem.

Our hearts are going out to the beautiful Stella. I hope she makes a speedy recovery and is back to being the amazing BT we see in the photos. BT Hugs from Tillyxxx

Whoops sorry, thats huge, how do I make picture smaller!

You're right--it is their problem. Our doctor is going to put in an implant, to fill the socket out. I didn't care, but my husband thought it might look a bit better.

The doctor told me to expect a Halloween character, and lethargy for the next week, but she should be able to live a normal life afterwards, albeit at a slightly slower rate.

I have just been delivered another bombshell, but I can't think about it right now. There is a settling of acqueous fluid on her good eye, which we'll need to closely monitor in the weeks and months to come. This is secondary glaucoma, however--caused, goodness knows how--and not genetic, so hopefully that will give us a bit more breathing room.

Thanks, Cala. My feeling is that if it moved to the other eye, it would be kinder to put her to sleep. She isn't the kind of dog to enjoy puttering about on a lead, and I think the stress of it would really do a number on her (she is already fussy about her space in relation to other dogs, and the ball...well, we know how much she lives for chasing her tennis ball).

My husband, however, is in complete disagreement, and has said no bloody way would we put her to sleep. If she was some doddery chihuahua or an older dog, maybe it would make sense to let her tick over, but I'm not so convinced. Please don't think me evil

Oh Prose, im so so sorry. My mum and i have been thinking and worrying about you all, all day. Im sorry it has had to come to this for her. Ive still got everything crossed that the poor little mite doesn't have any problems with her other eye.

...and no one would ever think you evil Prose, you would only be doing whatever you chose to do in the best interests of little Stella, we all know that!!

Big kisses from Louby to Stella xxxx

Prose, I don't think you are evil. We decided that should Chaka's other eye become affected with the cancer we would have her pts. It would have affected her quality of life too much. Sadly the cancer spread to other parts of her body and we lost her 8 months later. I don't regret having her eye removed though, we had a few more great months with her. I am keeping everything crossed that Stella's other eye is okay. I am thinking of you.

Hugs for you and stella...... such a sad post

Only good thing to say is that stella wont miss her eye and certainly wont sit staring in the mirror worrying about it
smile.gif
so long as she is painfree then she will be happy

You're quite right. As soon as she's back to this , this, and this, all will be well in the prose household

The surgery went well, aside from a minor regurgitation at the beginning. They are closely monitoring her breathing for the next 24 hours, and all being well, she should be home tomorrow night.

Oh Prose hunny, I've just caught up with all of this!! Huge hugs winging their way across the water to you, your OH and little your gorgeous little doglet! I have no experience of this, so can only offer support rather than advise. I have everything crossable crossed!

Im soo sorry to hear about this, only just caught up with it all, what an awful thing to happen to her and to you. Sending huge hugs that she makes a good recovery and pray that her other eye can be saved.

I don't think you are eveil at all, you are being brave and putting Stella first.
But think positive, hopefully it will just be the one eye, thank god we are all designed with a spare, it will still be the same lovely little Stella inside.

Glad the surgery went okay. I am sure you and she will be happier when she is back home with you. Still keeping everything crossed the other eye will be okay. x

Good to hear it went well.... she will just be relieved to be out of pain, and maybe not noticing that her binocular vision is a bit up the shoot!!!

Oh I wish I'd read this and replied sooner. Please don't worry! I had a JRT who had exactly the same thing (it is very common in terriers because of the way they 'worry' their prey), and she had one eye removed. A few months later, she had the second one removed, and people who saw her never realised. Dogs do not have the psychological issues with loss of sight that humans do, and mine coped perfectly. Her other senses took over, and she hardly ever walked into things. It was obviously a relief for her to be out of pain, and the whole thing was far more traumatic for OH and me than it was for her! Really - do not worry, she will be her usual self, only happier and not in pain.
