Seen a lovely pony for my daughter that seems almost perfect for her in every way except looking at its mouth it's got the teeth of a 30 yo donkey when it's half that age! Gapped overgrown not straight hence my dilemma re progressing with sale. Worries about future ability to feed & keep weight on, increased chances of colic, abscesses, poss bitting issues if mouth got sore...etc!! Any comments to assist me with my decision,,I'm thinking it's too big a risk & walk away but riding wise it's a perfect fit,,,hmm...
Thanks for any suggestions!!

I wouldn't let it's teeth out me off as long as the price reflects the state of it's gob! You will need a good dentist to sort them out as if they are overgrown the poor thing won't be able to do that grinding motion horses use to eat.

I had a horse given to me who had quite bad teeth, she was seen by our regular dentist for a few years who never touched the bad ones at the front, we moved yards and changed dentists and the new dentist was shocked at her teeth and gave us the number of someone better trained than herself to sort them out.

Get a vet who is also an EDT to look at pony and give an opinion. I've got a rising four year old with cheek teeth problems, she has cost me a fortune and will continue to cost me a fortune. I bred her and bred her to keep, and like her a great deal and to me she is worth spending money on but i would never buy one with known teeth problems.

Are you sure it ISN'T a 30 year old??? If the current owner can let the teeth get as bad as you describe I'd be very cautious about buying from them and believing what they have told you about the pony.

Thank you all..I think you've voiced some of my doubts...I know buying any horse is a risk but in this case the risk that I know about is best avoided!!
