How do you get your horses exercised when the weather is horrendous? It's extremely cold and windy today, our school is frozen over and it's too dark to hack, and the forecast for the rest of the week is heavy rain and strong winds

How do you cope when it's like this? It makes no difference to Flash whether he is worked or not thankfully but I don't like to give him so many days off to get fat and unfit!

"Awful weather, how do you ride?"

Badly, mostly. I just have to get out and do it. I was quite brave in defying the elements for three days of the long weekend, but Sunday I decided 's*d that'! He gets his first shoes of the year on Friday and come rain or shine, the flab will be fought!

Haven't got a clue.

Until the stable roof is fixed at the yard i've got two of the boys here and only a very boggy field to ride in. G totally panics in boggy ground and I can't do more than trot anyway. Oh and I have BD on Sunday and it's looking like im not going to be able to practice before hand.

I can tolerate either rain or wind, but when it's both together neither of us want to be out in it and we don't get anything productive done! I battled the elements twice over bank holiday but it was a fight until I gave up and took my frozen little body home!

always fun in the wind and rain! I use warm waterproof exercise sheet- prefrably one which covers your own legs and go for a few minutes round the school....

we then snuggle under the solarium to dry off!!

i dont ride, i rug boyo up and turn him out. he was hilarious in the field on saturday in the snow!! he rolled about in it and then stood there licking it then snorted and just jumped about on it. I did panic at one point though hwen he slipped as he was getting up but it was allpart of the game and he just charged off again. Its the first time he's seen snow with us (dont even know if he has seen snow before he was imported) it was just so funny!!

I've struggled this week! New horse, no school, inside or out, field been really wet, but have managed some walking work in the field and a hack out, but not for very long!
Am braving it tonight, regardless, as desperate to get a proper ride in!

i dont mind riding in the rain.. not particularly keen on the wind as it is like signing my on death warrent. i just worry about getting her dry and warm after as don't have any high tech gadgets, just a stable and towels.. she dries pretty quickly but i worry about her getting a chill if i turn her out well shes still a bit warm even with a rug on. bless her shes gettin on a bit so like to look after her well.
xx

New horse doesn't mind wind but was a bit surprised when it kept trying to lift the exercise sheet over our heads! But I hate getting my tack soaked, I was lucky today and just managed to dodge the showers but it didn't go especially well..it's such a pain when it's grotty and it feels like it has been awful for about 15 months now....will spring never come?

I don't!

I had just started bringing Milly back into work and then the weather has gone bad, so we don't go out!

I don't have a school to ride in, so it is either the fields or lanes; neither of which I want to be out in when it is wet and windy.

Milly is out 24/7, so it's not as if she isn't doing anything. I do wish I had a school though.

If its that bad I just thank my lucky stars that he lives out and couldnt care less if he is worked or not, plus we are not competing so he doesnt need to be uber fit!!!

well because the weekend for a good part of the year is my only time to ride i go in almost any weathers
my horse gets a fluorescent water proof exercise sheet and i get the waterproof hi viz on and get going

[/ QUOTE ]I do that but my horse also goes on the covered horse walker or if the roads are icy I can ride or loose school in the indoor school.

I'm determined to brave it tonight, I've put loads of layers on for work today as the office was freezing yesterday and I found it impossible to motivate myself to go out in the cold after spending a whole day shivering! Just hope it doesn't rain too hard
