Not only have my insurance company not offered final payment yet, ive just noticed they are still taking payments :-/
Its upsetting enough to loose a horse I idolized, but having his hospital bill looming overhead is a constant reminder and I just want to forget.

How long do you normally have to continue paying for a horse after its PTS?

They are starting to get ratty on the phone to me, as both Liphook and themselves are constantly blaming each other for the hold up, so id prefer to get my facts straight before questioning them again.

Firstly, sorry for your loss.

If they are still taking policy payments, can't you just stop your DD.

As for the outstanding bill, I guess you need to know what the problem is before you can help solve it. Either way, you're going to have to speak to them at some point.

Thank you Quirky, it is getting a little easier now its 3 months on x

I guess i could just stop the DD, but dont want to give them any excuse not to pay, so wanted to make sure that people normally stop paying or pay to end date as it were.

sorry for your loss

I had my filly pts last sept and they kept taking payments until march. I used to pay full amount for the year and they settled more quickly like that!

Just send an email to both asking if the paperwork has been received/sent and that they are doing their utmost to get this tragic situation sorted so that you may grieve quietly.

Sorry for your loss.

Do not stop your DD without speaking to your insurers first. This could mess your claim up.

The thing with insurance is that you pay for a yearly policy and then they offer you credit terms to pay for the full year in monthly installments (hence why paying monthly is more expensive). If your horse has died you can cancel the insurance and get a refund on the proportion of the policy you don't need, but you may still have to make some payments until you have paid the amount required. You tend to find that if you cancel with six months to go that you don't just pay for half. Six months cover works out more expensive than a year if you see what I mean.

Phone your insurance company and talk to them about what is going on. If they aren't being very helpful as to speak with a manager.

I am not sure if I have this right, butfrom what I understand....if your policy runs for example Oct to Oct, and then in November (one month in to the policy) you make a claim (no matter what it's for) which they pay on, then you are obliged to continue making payments up til the policy normally ends. So if your policy was £400 for the year, and you make a claim of say £1000, they pay the £1000, less your £150 excess - they write a cheque for £850. However, you are still obligated to pay the whole £400 for the year - you can't just accept the £850 and then cancel the policy after only one month's worth of payment. If they are dragging their feet re; payment, I'd certainly get on the phone with them again and find out exactly WHY? Are they disputing the claim?

Sorry about your horse, I hope at least the insurance company does the right thing by you.

My insurance company did this. When they finally paid out for all the vets fees and horses value and then asked for a refund for all the money they had taken from me since he died. They did that no problems.

I'm with NFU.

No, if the horse dies half way through the year (or 3 weeks into renewal in my case) you can terminate the policy.

If you had a car, crashed it ( then claimed) then once repaired sold it you would cancel your policy wouldn't you? You wouldn't pay for the whole year.

My insurance company were very good when Monty died.....but then again, they didn't have to pay anything since he was geriatric. He died mid-month and I'd already paid for the whole month and they refunded me the two weeks.

Sorry for your loss - it's never easy.
If you have an annual policy (irrespective of if paid in a lump sum or monthly) then usually the terms are that in the event of ANY claim the full premium would be due. Check your policy wording as it would normally be in there - that's where I found it.
I've never had a "monthly" policy I've had to claim on for mortality so don't know how they work.
Often if you are paying monthly for an annual policy you can ask your insurers to stop the monthly payments & they'll just deduct the remaining premium from any settlement and then if for any reason your claim is turned down you won't have to chase them for the premium.

I am insured with NFU. I pay the premium monthly. On May 5th, my horse was rushed to Liphook. She was put down the following day. It took NFU a week to send the form out. It took me a further week to get my vet to complete it. Liphook sent the PM results direct to NFU. On 9th June NFU paid Liphook and sent me a cheque for the mortality claim. A couple of days later I received a letter saying they had reduced the monthly DD - as I also have a pony on that policy.

They withheld £200 excess and the cost of the post mortem from what they paid direct to Liphook - I had to pay that to them myself.

The vet at Liphook had spoken to NFU's vet to make sure they agreed with her being pts. So maybe that sped things along ?

It is not really acceptable that you are still waiting 3 months on. I guess sometimes it depends on whom you are insured with.

Phone insurers and just ask them what the hold up and what information is missing - then you can furnish them with it.

Do not cancel your DD.

Who are your insurers??

Sorry for your loss. Just for info, my policy states that in the case of death, I will still need to pay the full years premium (the cost of PM if it is needed comes down to me to pay as well). You might be able to ask them to take the remainder of the premium out of the money they are due to pay you, thus cancelling the policy and not having a monthly reminder? Not sure if they do that though... Good luck with it all- maybe send them an email laying it all out so you dont have to go through it on the phone?

i waited a week later to cancel mine. They were brillliant and just stopped it immedately.

sorry for your loss x

Thank you for all your views, ill leave the direct debit for now as I guess they will refund me if Im entitled.

Im with KBIS and they had been brilliant at paying out until this last bill. Both Liphook and KBIS are arguing over paperwork, ie the notes. The insurer keeps saying they have repeatedly requested the notes and Liphook say they keep sending them.

I might ask Liphook to send a copy to me so that I can record delivery it on.

Ok, now im feeling really awkward.

Just spoke to Liphook to ask for a copy of the notes and it turns out they havent been done yet after all and they apologized for me being told they had.

Naughty slow vet x
