I have read several threads on here recommending Axiom rugs and I just wondered how they measure up length and depth wise?

My daughter has a 16hh Russian Warmblood X who is really chunky and we are having problems getting rugs that fit him. The main problem is across his chest - the ones we have tried have all been extremely tight across the chest, with one so tight he couldn't put his head down to graze!

He normally takes a 6'6" rug so can anyone tell me if thats the size I should order, or does he need a bigger size to accommodate his 'chunkiness'?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated (before we spend any more money on unsuitable rugs!)

I've always found then fine, perhaps a bit generous. The only thing with it I'd say is the straps are quite short. You could buy an extender?

rubbish, poor quality and generous is an overstatement. Purchased a 5"9" and it was huge - I measured it at it was actually 6ft 6".

Once bitten, twice shy.

I don't know what rug you bought but I've got the 1800 denier ballistic one & it's the only rug that his playful field mates haven't managed to rip to shreds..that's why I decided to try it as it was only £50 so if it failed it weren't the end of the world. It has been much better than his Weatherbeeta & Masta rugs.

Thanks for the comments, perhaps we wont bother ordering one of these then!

I've also been told that Mark Todd rugs are quite good for chunky horses so maybe we'll have a look at those instead.

I bought 2 Axiom rugs last winter and love them. Got one for my Mum's appy and one for my 16.2 KWPN x ISH (fairly chunky). They both fitted well and neither rubbed anywhere. I got an 1800D one for the appy as he was trashing everything and it's the only rug he hasn't torn so far! I bought 6'6" which is what they're wearing in other rugs and they fitted just fine.

Here's Belle in her one last winter:

Really? Two people say they're rubbish and you won't buy them??

I have to say they're the best fit for Bob (and he's a right chunk) and they have lasted far longer than any of the more expensive ones. In this case I disagree with the cheap rugs = skimpy rugs comment!!!

I bought one with a view of if it last the winter them that's grand and we're coming into our 3rd winter with it. I have three in total and personally I think they're the best rugs I have spent my hard earned money on.

I'm really surprised at that. I've bought a air few, all true to size and a good fit for my creature, who is on the cusp of being a H/W and needs a good size for his big shoulders.

I'd say for the price, they're really good and worth having.

each to their own - i speak from experience - same as you do - but my experience is enough to not go there again for me.

i bought one for my chunky tbxnf as normally any other rug would be tight round her shoulders but i was very pleasently surprised and after a couple of winters it still looked like new!!! i just wish i could find some in a 7'3 as IMO they're great value for money :)

I bought one last winter and I love it. Its a 1800D and kept my boy warm and dry when he was out last winter. Definitely worth the money. They are deep and covers my boy well. I bought a 6'3 which is his usual size.

don't have a clue what rug you bought either because one of my geldings is 5'9 and his Axiom in 5'9 fit him perfectly. the other gelding of mine is 6'0 and again, fits him perfectly.

I brought one new on Ebay for £20 2 years ago as I had just brought a horse and wasn't sure if I would be keeping him so didn't want to spend to much.

I pulled it out 2 days ago and put it on and it is still going strong, I have washed it and re proofed it myself. It also fits really well.

So I would defo buy another, but I think with rugs, saddles etc it's different strokes for different folks

I have mine, 2 years later. I think they're great! Lovely and silky lining. One of them gave up the ghost when it got mauled by massive gnashing horse in the field >:( rather it was that than my boy's skin though .

I toyed with saying mine were rubbish so that people wouldn't bid against me for them on eBay :). They are some of the best quality and longest (deepest) rugs I've ever bought at a fantastic price. Lengthwise I find the 6ft 9 inch true to size and great on my 17hh MW hunter.

I like them :) mine had to be repaired but is well worth the money. Think it cost £35 including postage for a 180 fill. Couldn't complain. Even second hand people will pay £25+ on eBay..so can't be that bad ;)

I have bought two and really rate them, one was for my pony who trashed every single rug he wore apart from his axiom rug. My TB has had his for the past two winters and it has been brilliant. It has been the only combo rug I have had on my TB not to have rubbed half his mane off!
I would say they are true to size, I have bought the same size as I usually would. They are nice and deep. They have gone up in price since I have bought mine but I would definitely buy another one.

For the past 3 years I have bought nothing but Axiom rugs for my 2 (out of 6 - other 4 only take 4'0 never found an Axiom to fit them) and they're fab, I don't buy any other winter turnouts apart from ridelouk who sells them on ebay.

i am on the 3rd winter with both of mine...neither have been repaired...nor reproofed...excellent quality.

i bought the 1200den for 23.99 and 26.99 off ebay

and id buy again :)

I brought mine for about £35 inc P&P off e-bay 2 tears ago and it's about to be brought out for it's 3rd winter, still looking almost good as new. My mare takes a 6'0'' and the axiom came up true to size and so far has been the only combo not to rub her whispy appaloosa mane  I'm definitley going to get another this year as my other girl needs a new middleweight.

Thank you for all the comments. Perhaps I was a little hasty in saying I wouldn't buy one after a couple of negative comments...seems like most people think they are very good value for money.

My daughter has only had her horse a few months and has had to totally kit him (and herself) out so money is a little tight at the moment.

I think we might have to have a look on ebay!!

I also dont agree that cheap rugs = skimpy rugs. I love the Saxon rugs, which fit my cob beautifully and at a great price too!

Had my for the past 2 winters on my purebred RID youngster. Really rate them much better than the Amigo and Weatherbeetas I've had for her. The silky lining prevents shoulder rubs anfd they are really hard wearing. Mine has kept waterproof and hasn't needed reproofing. My RID lives out 24/7 so it reallt has had good use. Trouble is I can't find them in 7' as she's growing out of her 6'9" now. Apart from Ebay are there any other outlets selling them does anyone know??

I had two of these in 6ft and 6ft3 and only ever used the 6ft one! Need to sell the other but they are fantastic rugs and would highly recommend them to anyone :)

How do you all get 6'6 and 6'9 to fit your 16hh+ horses? The only one of ours that we can get into a 6'9 is the Hanoverian and he is barely 16hh, the others, all 16.2 to 17hh, need 7'0 and 7'3 s! It would be so much easier if they would fit into the smaller ones as there seem to be more around!

Having tried ALL makes, even fal pro at £260 and a rambo supreme at £280 the Axiom 1800d is the ONLY rug my horse hasn't trashed. They never rub, well cut, don't find the straps short and for the third winter are going strong.

They were only £40 at the time too :D
