... I will try to keep this as brief as possible but want to explain whole circumstance so i dont miss anything
When i got my mare (3yo TB) in this afternoon she was really tense in the hindquarters, looked swollen at the point of the hip, sunken underneath and in certain positions you could feel a really rigid/ tensed line of muscle across her flanks, almost like a heave line had extended along to her flanks. I did not call the vet as she was in no immediate pain and was sound in walk and trot.
She has been turned away since November and brought back into work last week gradually with a mix of lunging and schooling. Her feed has remained the same over the whole winter and she is on 1 mug of A&P Calm and Condition, small scoop of Hi-Fi and a scoop of Speedi Beet twice a day. She has around 8kg of haylage overnight and is out at minimal grass with a share of hay (usually one slice) through the day.
This morning i lunged her but she was being really naughty bombing around and then after she had calmed down i lunged for a further 20 minutes trot and canter with a bit of pole work- no changes in the way she was going. She sweated more than she had ever done before but as she had been silly and is unfit i didn't think anything of this.
Once i had worked her i walked her off until she had stopped puffing, then turned her out without a rug as she was still quite damp.
having spoken to a few people they say it sounds like a mild case of azoturia (of which i have no experience or knowledge lol). However, it did not occur whilst exercise as azoturia usually would, nor was she lame, stiff or the muscles spasming in any way but was a little touchy over her hindquarters. She allowed me to pick up her back legs but wold not allow for them to be fully extended.
I guess the cause would be because she was not sufficiently warmed up and them probably made worse that she was turned out damp and maybe has got a bit chilly???
The information i am struggling to find is where to go from here! She has never had anything like this before and- if it is azoturia as i expect- seems to have got away lightly with it. But what should i do regarding resuming exercise- i've seen one book that says give her two days off and then resume light work and another which says rest her for 1-2 weeks but having had no experience in this previously do not know which advice to adhere to!?
Thank you
