Azoturia or something else?

Hi Guys,
I have an 18 year old mare - brought back into work about 6 weeks ago having had foals - brought out yesterday exhibting symptoms very similar to azoturia (which she had once previously when eventing) - better today but still choppy and stiff behind - we gave her bute and electrolytes yesterday. This mare has heaps of turnout and light fittening exercise about 5 days a week - all she is fed is hi fi lite, speedi beet and 2 cups of stud balancer. Any views?

i have a 6 yr old who has had azorturia twice since xmas. vet came and put him on strict box rest and pain relief. If you suspect it is azorturia you need to keep them still and quiet and seek vet advice. Serious damage can be done to muscles and kidneys if not. we have had to change our feed to help him, no sugar beet or molassed chop or hard feed.

I have an ex-racehorse that I was told used to get Azoturia, since we have had him we have fed Saracen Re-leve and Equi Jewell and have had no problems as they are very low in starch and recommended for horses that have problems with tying up. Saracen were really helpful and gave me loads of helpful advice. He looks great, works well without tying up or showing any signs of doing so. Try the Saracen website and fill in their feed check form. Definately worked for my horse!

It might not seem it but the stud balancer is extremely potent stuff, I use it as a top up for my Big TB in very hard work, and he only gets 1 cupful, I give it to the other one too but he only gets 1/2 a cup! My mum tried her mare on it (she is mid/third trimester now) and it was too rich for her even at 1/2 a cup a day. I would knock it back to 1/2 a cup and see fow you go, if she is only doing light fittening work then she won't need a huge amount of hard feed.

Hi, dont feed anything with barley in it and a really good additive is selenevite E. Keeping to this really worked for my horse.
