I wondered if someone could help me... I'm going to be turning 25 in a few weeks and then will automatically be insured to drive my friend's Land Rover Defender. This means I'll be able to tow but then I'll need to take my towing test - any idea how much money this will cost me to do in the long run and what the test will involve? My pony is only 13.2hh so I may be able to get away without taking the B+E test but I'm not sure... Any advice at all is very welcome!

Hiya

I think the test is £115 and I cant remember how much the lessons were. I think it was about £60 for 2 hours but it will differe depending on where you are. I had about 10 of these lessons (and I cant stress the importance of these) and then practice on my own as well. People tend to think its just about the maneuvers but its not. The main part of the test is almost an hours drive, checking your mirrors-its more tricky than you may think. You need to do an emergency stop, answer some questions about the vehicle and trailer, hitch up and then un hitch again and do the dreaded reversing maneuver, which is like reversing back around a cone in a z shape. I much prefer doing the lessons once a week rather than the intense 2 day course as I practiced then in the week on my own but of course its up to you. £115 is a lot so I wanted to make sure I was good and knew what I was doing before I took my test.

Good luck, it is def worth it :)

Hi,

I did mine earlier this year. It cost me about £620 for 2 days of training and the test on the third. Im sure others will go in to more detail but I did my show and tell questions (most are the same as the car ones). then the reverse exercise, then roughly 40 mins on road and then go back to test centre and do unhitch/hitch up exercise.

There may be a single horse trailer that you can tow on a normal licence but I personally dont like them at all! Though it was rather expensive, ive done it now and providing I dont loose my licence ill never have to do it again. I was VERY nervous, took me 5 times to pass my car test but did trailer one 1st time.

the cost of the test itself is £115 for weekday, £141 for evening or weekend. It cost me about £800 in total, but this was because I failed the first time, so had to pay another £115, + another half day of car and trailer hire.
