Hey all!
I know a few have asked questions about the test before but I want all the details and people's opinions on what I should do!
I have been towing trailers with a tractor for years now and can do every reverse manoeuvre in the book along with hitching up, however, to tow my horse trailer on the road I have to sit the test BUT will I need to do some of these expensive courses b4 I would stand a chance of passing the test?
Has anyone done the courses and benefitted from them?
Also if anyone has sat the test could you tell me what you had to do and what questions they asked you?
AND finally!!..where could I sit my test? I've seen a few places online but all quite far away- I'm based in Inverclyde.
Many thanks!! :)

Hi

My OH has been towing trailers (tractors and livestock trailers on the farm) for many years, however he failed his test twice. I however who had never towed a trailer before in my life booked myself 3x 3hour lessons before my test and passed first time.

You have to take the test at a HGV test centre I think. So look up on the DVLA website it should tell you where you can take your test.

If I were you I'd phone up a few places round you that do the training and explain the situation. They should all do an assesment drive which is normally about 2 hours and then see what their opinion is. It doesn't cost much and at least you'll know what if anything you need to work on and you won't be obliged to take up lesson if you don't feel you need to

^^^^ that

The DSA way of doing it is likely to be your biggest barrier with your experience

Try to think back to your car test and then add a trailer

I would definitely recommend doing a 'course' before sitting your test. I doubt you will need to do one that takes 2-3 days but it is very valuable to know what the examiner is looking for and to have your everyday driving skills brushed up! (e.g. looking in the mirror a lot!!)

I had 6 months of towing my horse on L plates before I took my test. I had a morning of training before taking my test at 2pm the same day. I would recommend doing this!

Questions asked are along the lines of trailer safety, how to hitch up and some general driving/towing questions. There are lots of books about, and I would recommend getting one to have a look through. The reversing part is the hardest (and you do that first), you then have to show you can drive on the roads with a trailer safely etc.

I'm the opposite end of GB to you (Hampshire!) so can't advise on where to take the test in your neck of the woods. Good luck :)

Supervising a B+E learner

The supervisor must have a full B+E licence for at least 3 years and be over age 21

NOTE: - there is a MYTH going around that those supervising must have taken the B+E test but that is a MYTH and NOT FACT - often see this MYTH on B+E driving school websites - I wonder why .......

L plates must be fitted

Motorway is allowed

Insurance is a queer one - the learner driver must be insured but the supervisor does not have to be unless they actually drive it

I 98% sure it says this on the paper part of your licence if you dont have the b+e category!

i did three days training and did the test on the third day. You will be at a slight disadvantage in that you will need to unlearn everything and do it the way the dsa want you to do it. I towed mine on L plates to practice with. The manouvers only take a small part and are fairly easy, the part you are more likely to mess up on is the driving as something could easily muck it up for you. You also have to now do a section of independent driving. You will either be asked to follow the signs for somewhere or asked to memorise a set of directions. (not easy when you are nervous!!)
