failed stupid trailer test on the reverse yesterday so I think I need to do some practice with the proper cones etc laid out as I was shocked at how small it all seemed yesterday.

Can someone (Rog?) tell me how far back the first cone is from the front compared to the length of the combination, and then where the bay is measured from that? a diagram would be helpful too if anyone has a link.

thanks in advance

In all honesty having just done the test myself. I really would get instruction from someone. Doing the test with none could just end up costing you an awful lot of money in retests. The guy I used was absolutely brilliant! In theory performing the reverse is a case of getting as close to the front left hand cone as possible. Full hard lock right and then reverse slowly as you then see the middle of the trailer come into vision in your left hand mirror hard lock left and then you should be able to see the bay and just reverse in a relatively easy way back into the bay. You can correct twice I believe but only get out of the vehicle to check you are as far back into the bay as you need be once.

What bit of the reverse did you struggle with?

Thanks for your reply, but I've been taking lessons (sorry, didn't make that clear in my post). I've probably had 15 hours lessons over the course of the last 8 months and a fair bit of practice in between.

I don't usually struggle with any bit of the reverse (ironically it was the bit I was least worried about!) but in fairness I haven't been practicing with my instructor with it all laid out, so when the examiner went to move the cones etc, I got flustered as it looked very small. Started off fine and then fluffed it because I tried to correct but got into a pickle.

Thanks for the link Rog, that's perfect. Fingers crossed for next time hey!

I did a one day course for £355 including the test. With the test straight after failed it on being a prat in the hitch and unhitch. Re did it 10 days later with an hours tuition and passed straight away. You should definitely be doing the manoeuvres just before the test or the day before to jog your memory :-) the nerves are what I struggled with the most!

ah thank you, having a lesson a few days before my retest (shame you don't get a discount, like an MOT!!) so hopefully we can work around some cones and get it sorted.
