IT IS NOT FAIR *throws hissy fit screaming*

Dan is back in the broken pony club and BIG BIG styley.

Got text from YO when I was on phone just after work to call her. Call her and she said that Dan had jumped out of field and she was almost certain he done either check or suspensory liagment and that she was bandaging him up etc.

Phone vet on route home (on bluetooth i may add ) who as there was relatively little they could do this evening advised bute, cold hosing & bandaging and someone would come to see him the following day. So vet is coming up tomorrow.

went straight to yard *whistles innocently about driving slightly to fast* to find a VERY lame and sorry looking Daniel. He is what I would call 9 tenths lame. He is only weight baring minimally when moving round stable so not quite full ten tenths lame! but he is literally hopping in the true sense of the word.

Have bedded him right down with straw everywhere other than where hayledge goes just to give him such extra padding. Given him bute in a very minimal feed but the swine was turning his nose up at it.

Although he is the biggest wimp in the world I would be amazed if he hasn't ripped/pulled a ligament/tendon as this is the lamest I have ever seen him.

not 100% sure what he did but we pretty certain. We think he attempted to jump out of his field at a point where it is particulary muddy/boggy (at least foot deep) didn't make the height and took top part of fencing (thick electric tape) with him and crashed/pecked or similar on landing which is when the damage was caused.

but tell me why doesn't my horse want to be sound. He has been sound for months following treatment for arthritis (bone spavins/navicular) and I was just thinking of taking him to play at some prelim dressage but thats out the window now and he prospectively has months on box rest

but yes MAJORLY unfair and I feel like throwing another hissy fit now

Oh poor you. Get some peppermint corrdial & mix that with bute till a paste & then add to feed. Worked a treat at conning mine when had to give it & they wouldn't touch it!!

Don't blame you for feeling that way at all.
Having received some info lately in the post, it seems the best treatment recommended now is rest a week then laser.
(it was an article in a professional mag that gets sent to stud owners )
The vet reported had he not seen the progress with his own eyes he wouldn't have believed it.
After not realising how badly injured Jonty was I am determined to do the very best for the next tendon injury. I still like the spa treatment but I would investigate the laser info if I were you.
Fingers' crossed it isn't as bad as you fear, doesn't sound good tho does it...

God I totally feel for you you must be completly at the end of your tether

I know how frustrating it is have a simialrly accident prone horse with endless probs to fix!

Just stay positive. It could be just a bang or a bruise somwhere. If he is a wuss like my Owen he will be hopping just because he knocked it. I remember when Owen banged one of his back legs on a XC fence and went frightfully lame but was absolutely fine after 48 hours to allow the bruising to go down. Sounds like Dan hit a fence hard here as well today so maybe a simialar sort of bruising injury.

I have fingers crossed he is OK. Pray that its just a bruise!!

Ditto. My horse went 9/10 lame last Thursday in her box with swelling above and below the fetlock. The vet came out and did a full work up with nerve blocks and everything and was expecting to bring x-ray and ultrasound equipment out the next day - but she was back on 4 legs the next morning, and now, just 4 days later she has been passed as sound and back to normal!

I really was expecting 6 months box rest - but bruising can cripple them temporarily, so hopefully that's what you've got

The vet has been to look at mine today as he was OK Saturday, resting a hind leg which he NEVER does, Sunday and this morning. Def heat in leg, huge pulse and doesn't want to move much. Vet did hoof testers - horse played with leadrope - vet did flexion test - horse went to sleep and trotted away 1/10 lame (on a spavined leg!)- vet did touchy, feely, pokey up and down hip to hoof - horse ate my potted plants.

Advised bute, box rest and gentle walking out for ten days. Mine is also a wimp so probably a fly landed on him somewhere. Thing with lameness is YOU NEVER CAN TELL. I refuse to get worked up this time, as I went to hell and back for (as it turns out) no reason and have come up with my new philosophy. If it's knackered, shoot it and buy another. GTs would be proud of me!!!! (Spot the fake bravado) No point adding the cost of hair dye to the vet's bills.......

Oh poor you and dan, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not as bad as you think it is.

Last march we went to the yard the morning after a hunter trial to find my sister's event pony non weight bearing on his front leg. It was very hot and swollen and he was clearly in a lot of pain because he is one of those ponies that normally jjst gets on with things. A scan showed that he had a slight tear in his tendon. He had 2 weeks box rest after which the vet couldn't even see where the tear was using the ultrasound machine, and then he had 4 weeks paddock rest. He was back eventing by August and has been hunting this winter 100% fine.

I really hope it's not as bad as you are expecting xxx
