Had vet out last night to check Happy over 5 weeks after his off hind hock joint had been medicated to see how he was doing. He's been walking for 3.5 weeks but I wasn't happy that he was 100% back to normal. I thought his back wasn't right still because it felt as though my left leg was sitting in the wrong place and I felt wonky. His pelvis is higher one side and he is sore behind the saddle.
So flexion tests were done - he has improved and gone from 3/10 lame to 1.5/10 lame but still lame. The vet just used a bog standard steroid apparently but seeing as that hasn't been a complete success I've got to take him in on Monday afternoon to have a further look and perhaps something else used. Feel frustrated and as though I'm destined to always be aware that something is likely to go wrong with him!! Why is it that the people who don't ride their horses for weeks then get them out of the field and hunt them all day then chuck them back out again never have any problems? I said to the vet I wished I could be one of those people but I'm not!! I am taking the saddle with me for them to see - it has been checked twice by saddler that fitted it and also gets checked by back lady everytime she comes so hopefully that will be ok.
Just wondered whether anyone else had had this kind of experience and where they went from here? Apparently the arthritis isn't very bad and they just want to keep the joint lubricated but that because he's a sensitive soul he's still sore. According to the vet the majority of horses would be absolutely fine but he would have to be one of the ones that isn't!
Good job the vets all love him as much as I do. We all laugh that because he's a man he can't multi-task i.e if we are trying to do flexion tests I have to stuff him full of polos to keep him busy at the front end otherwise he starts playing up!!
Sorry so long.
