Just over a week ago, Byter decided she wasn't happy that YO had let next door put baby moo-cows in her winter field (well thats what I think) and kicked out at them, putting her leg through the wire and making a right mess. (we only have ONE small section of the squared wire anywhere in the field and the little sod found it!)

Now she hasn't been lame at all through this, and the wound wasn't stitchable, and I've dealt with worse so we didn't get the vet.

We washed it off and disinfected it and I poulticed it over night with a dry animalintex as it was still a bit bloody and to keep flies off. Once that was off we used wound powder tohelp dry the wound out a bit, then a wound gel to help it heal.

BUT the heat and the flies have made it flare up again, and I think I didn't poultice it long enough and the gel and powder have sealed a bit of infection in which has now broken back out.

So I put a warm wet poultice on it (animalintex aagain) on Sunday, which pulled all sorts of revolting smelliness out. Dry poulticed it yesterday and today, still pulling gunk out. I'll keep doing this til there is no more gunk but then what? I know it needs air to heal and scab over, but the bloody flies are really vicious - in or out makes no difference they are everywhere.

Vet is coming on Tuesday anyway for Ivy's jabs so he can check it then, but I'm annoyed with myself for it getting like this.

Any miracle tips, should I get some cut heal spray and seal it in? That should keep the winged monsters out?

Should've got the vet - antibiotic cover a definate must with wounds like this.

I would ring them tomorrow - rather than wait until Tuesday personally - and get them to prescribe some for you.

Our vet says wound powder is the invention of the devil. Wounds need to be wet to heal properly, wound powder just clogs it up. Well meaning owners put powder on that clogs the wound rendering it unstitchable.

Please get the vet asap especially with this hot weather.

Ouch! Bl**dy horses - you can always trust them to hurt themselves given any opportunity.

I have to agree with the other opinions given GM - vet call out ASAP I'd say. Sorry! Hope she recovers quickly.

I would get a course of Trimediazine/Penicillin and bute off the vet and poultice for no more than 3 days. Keep it covered with melolin, soffban and vetrap. Use Intrasite, Inadine or Jelonet dressings and leave on for 3 days. Then either poultice for 12 hours or put another dressing on.
Wounds will heal faster when kept wet, with no proud flesh.
I cant tell whether that is a flap of skin, if it is you mat want to deaden it by putting copper sulphate on for 12 hours. After that cut the black skin off with scissors and kick on as above. Should be gone within 2 weeks.

Blimey! That looks REMARKABLY like PF's cut on her leg from when she fell in the trailer. I expect it does look worse than it is, but think antibiotics are a very good idea. Vet put PF on a 4-day course straight away just in case.

The most important thing is that the horse is given antibiotic cover to prevent infection and that the wound is able to heal from the inside out.

I'd want to ensure it was cleaned and scrubbed at least twice a day and to stop it scabbing over at the outside. After its been cleaned then I'd spray with a dilution of sea salt and sterile water which prevents granulation.

Anti biotics are a must asap! I have a good rapport with my local vet and can pop in for anti biotics, either ones to go in the feed or inject myself. Def don't wait til tuesday!

If your vet is anything like mine and fairly modern you could phone them and then send them a picture from your mobile - I did this recently at my vets request when I phoned for advice on a wound, she looked at it and said she didn't need to come out.

definetly looks worse than what it is i think...wound powder is the creation of the devil hough...definetly agree with that statement... am sure theres a place for it...juat haven't found it yet!!!
I would get the vet now though...seeing as there is infection, a course of antibiotics would be a good idea! They may be able to perscribe something similar to Dermobian which heals the wound and keeps the flies off.

Defo get a vet...and the miracle quick cure is in the form of Hydrotherapy....but not so suitable if theres not one near you...and you might not want to spend the money one that, but I have seen miracles happen with it!!

Well I reckon that looks worse than it is, but if an infection is trying to set in, then IMO you need to get AB's into her ASAP - shouldn't need a call out though if you know your vet well enough! Aren't you close to the beach (or do I have that wrong?) I'd be tempted to take her for a paddle!! Otherwise re: actual treatment - ditto Vici, but also second Dermobian - if you have any..... Do let us know how this progresses!! Sending the silly mare big huggles!!

Hello My horse is recovering from a wound far worse than that and it has had to be left uncoverd. The vet said he could go out as he hates being stabled and I was to wash it with salt water and apply summer fly cream which he gave me but i have since found out is available from saddlers. It has been awfull seeing the wound covered in flies as the cream wears of, but the vet came yesturday to remove a redundant flap of skin and said there are no fly eggs present and it has healed brilliantly. He had antibiotics in the early days of the injury, but has had non for the past month and it has still been an open wound. Hope this helps.

definatly get the vet out for it and i agree with everything everyone else has said on here but do use wet not dry..although now its going to be too late to stitch they might be able to glue or some thing..romes cut the bulb of his heel which wouldnt heal..so i know whats its like...
is your tetanus upto date...you may need a small booster to get over the worse

If you can get it cleaned THOROUGHLY and make sure there is NO infection in it I can give you some Camrosa to put on it. They reckon it keeps flies off and it is waterproof and heatproof.

Let me know if you need some.

It looks a perfect wound to use the cod liver oil and honey tulle gauzes on, they heal without proud flesh and need very little bandage over the top of them.
You buy them via your pharmacist as they were invented for serious burns, just clean the wound, stick the gauze on, cover with sticky bandage and leave at least 48 hours if possible. When you remove it the gunk should all be on the tulle and the would look pink and clean. after a few days you can just use wound powder and fly spray round the wound.
Oh and nappies are loads cheaper than animalintex and do exactly the same job.. (and have sticky tapes to fasten on....
If there is an equine spa near you this would be a very quick (if expensive!) way of healing this wound.
If the gunk doesn't stop after a day or so I think you will need antibiotics to finish the job..

vet is a well respected equine specialist with 45 years experience, just passing on his advice.

It may have it's place in keeping flies off healing wounds but if you read my post the problem lies with people putting it on as 1st aid as it often prevents the vet from being able to stitch.

eerrrrrrrrmmmm….. I'm not casting aspersions on the ability of your vet (or your post!) just making a comment that it's odd that your vet hates it and mine thinks its great. I believe wounds are difficult to stitch after a few hours has passed anyway. WOW touchy!

Well in this particular case it wasn't stitchable whether the vet was called straight away or not, she'd skinned the leg - there was nothing to stitch. She'd scraped all the fur and a good bit of skin off and left it on the fence...

Have to admit I rarely use wound powder normally. But then we've only had minor cust and scrapes and I've got a really good antiseptic spray and a cream and they do really well.

Getting some anti b's anyway and will see what the vet says.

You know Janine, a hoss at our fm had a fight with an ex police hoss (big bu**er she is) and she received a kick to her hind fetlock joint. The kick actually sliced open her skin - nasty but nothing horific. The owner phoned the vet and the vet said to poultice a couple of times and then leave it in the fresh air. You should see the state of it now - its absolutely horrific and that is a week on.

It must have something to do with the weather and flies like you say - usually a wound like the one at our fm would have healed up in no time.

Keep us posted.

Def. looks worse than it is... & I too have seen a lot worse... have even done something similar to myself so you could say I have first hand experience! Agree with salt water rinsing and see if your vet can give you some sulphur powder to dust on as a) this might help stop the flies + b) will help stop proud flesh...

I discovered Protocon the other day - Ty is always cutting up his legs (although not to this extent - yet!) and it works as a barrier cream to flies but also heals very quickly.

Can't hurt!
