Had so many members ask me where they could get something like a HB403 which can be used for B licence towing with the right vehicle that I thought this was worth a mention

SOME OTHER IDEAS

BATESON LIGHT HORSE TRAILER
CHEVAL LIGHT HORSE TRAILER
IFOR LIGHT HORSE TRAILER

Contact trailer manufacturer to have trailer downplated if needed (free or very little cost)

Toyota Rav 4 (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1425
GVW = 1785
Max towing weight = 1500
Max trailer plated MAM = 1425 kgs

Nissan X trail (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1515
GVW = 2050
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Kia Sportage (AWD) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1678
GVW = 2140
Towing = 1600
Max trailer plated MAM = 1360 kgs

FREELANDER 1 (2001 - 2005)
Unladen/kerb = 1500
GVW = 2040
Towing = 1800
Max trailer plated MAM = 1460 kgs

SUBARU FORRESTER (4X4)
Unladen/kerb = 1465 minimum
GVW = 2050 maximum
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Skoda Yeti (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Kerb = 1530
GVW = 2070
Towing capacity = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1430 kgs

Suzuki vitara (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Kerb = 1400
GVW = 1950
Towing = 1850
Max trailer plated MAM = 1400 kgs

Deduct trailer unladen weight from max trailer plated weight to get maximum load/horse weight for the trailer
Example:- Nissan (1450) minus IFOR HB403 (770 appx) = load/horse 680 kgs

Hi, could you tell me about down plating trailers - Do you just ask the manufacturer the weight you want or is there set guidelines. And I was hoping you could confirm something for me, I found this paragraph on DVLA and towing horse trailers " You can pull a trailer over 750kgs so long as the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and that the combination does not exceed 3500kgs." When it says the combination does not exceed 3500kg is that the weight of both unlaiden trailer and vehicle or the MAM of the two?

I am looking at a vehicle with the following spec's :-
unlaiden weight = 1660kg
MAM = 2170kg
85% = 1411kg

If I got a Bateson Derby for example
unlaiden = 675kg
MAM = 1700kg

I have a horse who is around 500kg could I get the MAM of the trailer down plated to say 1275kg so I could drive this combo on a B licence

Sorry this is so long winded just very confused.

So according to those specs, I could tow my horse, who is about 560kg, in that trailer with my Forester?

Still sounds terrifying. I can't look at that car and think, "Tow car."

Is it very American of me to still think that you should not tow a horse with anything smaller than this?

Don't forget the Subaru Legacy and the Legacy Outback. Also if you can find one there is the Isuzu TF (Vauxhall Brava with an Isuzu badge).

Coal Ila - I've towed with a Legacy for years, tows well with no problems :)

Forget kerb weight and the 85% thing because they have absolutely no relevance

Vehicle
2170 kgs GVW/MAM
Towing capacity = ???????????

Trailer
Max trailer plated MAM for B licence towing = 1330 kgs

Contact Bateson and get then to down plate it to 1300 kgs - they will take you through it all = very easy at little or no cost

You then have a Vehicle at 2170 added to a trailer MAM of 1300 = total 3470 which is under the 3500 limit

1300 minus 675 = 625 so you can load the trailer with 625 kgs - AS LONG AS THE TOWING CAPACITY FOR YOUR VEHICLE ALLOWS IT TO PULL 1300

Thank you yes the towing capacity is 2000kg - brilliant thanks again

I have a FREELANDER 2, which i currently pull Bateson Derby with.

However I would like a front unloading trailer, are there any other combinations I can use trailer wise?

We only have a small pony 250kg

FL2 is 2505kg GVW

thank you

You must have a B+E licence ?

Cannot help you with types of trailers

I passed after 1997, I had the trailer down plated to 995kg Gross.
FL2 Bateson Derby
GVW GVW
2505kg + 995kg= 3500kg

The Derby unladen is 690kg
Freelander can tow 2000kg

so just wondered how much weight I can have to get a trailer without taking additional test or swapping my freelander

AH = thats ok then for B towing and a 250kg small pony

995 is the max MAM for any trailer with a 2505 GVW so you are very limited to what you can get
