Went for a lovely ride yesterday, but got chased the entire way round by the horrid little things.

I had covered both of us in fly spray and even this didnt work.

Poor girlie now has a horrible fat lip from one of the b@stards :

Ive given her some anti histamine so hope this will bring the swelling down

LOL! If we could eradicate flies and make sure the ground stayed soft and ride able throughout summer than it would be perfect! (is that asking too much?!)

Could someone please invest something to kill off all horseflies?!!

I hope so too. Ive had a check inside and nothing else is swollen so im happy its not spreading anywhere else (Plus she is eating fine)

Its just solid and looks like a botox job gone wrong

Gosh that is terrible bite, we where hounded by the bloody thigns yesterday hacking up to our local CC, I got bit by the blood sucking things on my hand too.

Strange though because there arn't any down at our livery yard, horses are pretty much fly free which is rather strange but soon as we got into the next village....they were everywhere!
 
I put my shorts on yesterday, big mistake, I now have red and white spotty legs! The vet who came out on friday used flypor (sp?) for cattle, he put it on himself and said its the only thing he finds works, prob is you have to tell your feedmerchant a white lie and pretend you have got cows

Its quite localised where we came across them.... where possible we trotted (trying to be gentle to with her glass legs) which seemed to loose them for three mins, then they found us again.

Bitey things are the work of the devil, put here to spoil our enjoyment. I hope your girl is OK now.

ps. For humans I use something called 'After Bite' probably not available in the UK by that name, but it is basically ammonia (3.5% with a carrier oil) smells like cat pee, stings a bit but it is the best after bite stuff I have found. I have yet to find something to deter them. I don't know about using it on horses.

I dont think that snow we had was all that fun either though _ couldnt ride, packed in the feet) I am so difficult to please!

I do like the summer really- just REALLY wish they would bu@@er off and be useful some place away from horses! xx
 
poor Gem!!!

Use Coopers - expensive but kills them on contact and you don't have to use it daily.

I've worked out that Henry hates sprays more than flies so going to start putting coopers on him as it isn't in a spray!! xxx

I cant use that on her as it does something to her skin (I think it drys it out too much) as her black skin then comes to the surface and that attracts them even more.

Its a never- ending cycle!

oh, bum - I'd better not try it on Henry yet then!!!

Boys good, went for a lovely hack on Sat, my friend rode Henry and I took Max - they were both great!!

Sunday is the million dollar question!! Still waiting for them to come back to me about my lorry!! Are the entries today?? xx

p.s. heard there are no entries so could be fun!!!
 
Im not too sure, decided not to go as only want to do things on soggy ground, or on a surface for the sake of her legs.

Give coopers a go, maybe do a patch test or something.... it may just be sensitive skin... or the fact she is grey?! xx
 
I used flypor for the first time a few weeks ago, my husband - a farmer has been nagging me for ages to try it, i wish id started using the stuff years ago, it has quite remarkable results, like most horse owners ive used everything on the market and even made my own conncoctions, my 2 are cobs over 500 kilo's, i used 40mls each all along the neck down back to tail. it took couple days before i saw a difference and my my, wow! NO flies, as in none at all! even when sweaty after a hack, coming under trees by water where we normally get pounced upon. Im converted.
