Arg the first time that my dog is properly naughty and he does it in fine style.

After my husband fed him this morning he must not have put the lid back on the container properly. The idiot dog has found it, opened it and eaten it all, probably somewhere around 1kg of dry dog food (about 4 times his normal daily amount).

There is poo and wee all over the dining room floor! (he has been good enough not to poo on the carpets).

He does however seem to be very happy with himself.

He is an 8yr old Beagle.

SOOOO..... Vet or monitor? To walk him or not?

I'd do a gentle walk and monitor - my beagle mix is raw fed and gets occasional big bone meals when she gets those she can get 3 times a normal meal quite easily. Before I put a lock on the kitchen door (no really a lock) she has been known to open 2 doors, the freezer and eat the entire contents of my freezer, obviously massively bloated afterwards but generally a walk gets everything moving and her belly goes down - any symptoms of actual bloat - discomfort etc and I'd be straight to the vets though

Make sure he has plenty of water to keep things moving, especially as it was dry food.

If he looks in pain or stops pooing or peeing, I'd maybe call the vets for advice. If it were my dog, she'd be back within half an hour for seconds...

My beagle stored a chicken for later last time she did a freezer raid, it was hidden in her bed 2 rooms from the kitchen (literally buried). She pottered off at about 4pm and brought it in to the living room with her - presumably for round 2!

Sorry but absolutely NOT this at all. If he's had dried food, water is the last thing he needs because the food will swell and swell and swell.

Remove water, no exercise, no more food at all for at least 24 hours and be on your guard for bloat. If the belly is still soft, you should be fine but if it's already distended, dash to the vets quick sharp.

My dogs have done this twice to me - Willow very recently and I've gone to the vets both times but I'm a worry wart and don't leave much to chance :)

Well he seems ok at the moment, happy in himself and doing his usual begging for scraps from our dinner (he did not get any). Stomach is soft and he is surprisingly non gaseous.

That said he could have eaten it anytime between 8am and 4.30pm and whilst his water was empty when we got home it was not masses of water (he doesn’t normally drink even half of what we leave anyway). So he may have had his windy sessions whilst we were at work.

I would batten down the hatches - there could be an explosive episode tonight😀

Don't remove water- then he will be bloated and dehydrated... give plenty of fluids and if he is happy and well sit tight, if bloated or uncomfortable head to vets

Hope he is okay this morning. I had similar, though not as drastic, with one of my GSDs yesterday, she pinched half a box of Bonio. I think it must have been a bit like eating Jacobs crackers in bulk as she had left the rest, as the majority have said I limited her water (too much makes any dry matter swell), and monitored. No explosions overnight and seems fine today, hope your lad is the same.
