After a slightly aggressive display from Hudson towards one of his (older, crippled) field mates(No spring chicken himself and heading for retirement), over an apple slice yesterday(never happened before), I had this message today:

"Hudsons gone bonkers"

Apparently our gentle, loving boy had turned into a Spitting, Snorting stallion, walking all over the Wife, doing giraffe impressions and generally mental.

Would we be remiss in thinking that the mare in the "old boys" field has come into season?

B****y mares indeed. I looked for a horse for a year, didn't want a mare as I have loads of geldings and one field, and what did I panic buy? A mare.

So now I have one mare in permanent season, and half a dozen rampant geldings, all trying their luck with her. I am hot-stabling and hot-fielding - she goes out for a few hours with the chosen one, while all the others sulk in their stables. Every chance they get, they try to impress her, either by snuffling in her mane and whispering in her (rather large) ears, or the more macho ones scream and snort and strut as they pass her stable.

She encourages them all, leads them on, and it all ends in disappointment for both sides, although it is entertaining while it lasts. Surprising how long it lasts actually, given that they are indeed geldings :)

You just have to love the gelding/mare scenario. My daughter always repeats the famous words from Shrek (The donkey) when our gelding tries to impress "I'M A STAAALLLLIONN!!" :D
