B****y insurance company...........

Vet do mark up on insurance cases ! FACT ! I have proof ...

I know it was my dog but shows, Marcus went in for some scans at my Vets and I had asked how much before hand, as dog not insured . When I went to collect him they handed me the bill and I nearly passed out !!! They had quoted me £48 on the phone the bill was for £348 .. I explained that about the quote the receptionist disapeared to find out - on her return she explained they had given me the incorrect invoice . then reprinted a new one for the £48. However I still had the other one and other than the price the invoices were identical .... umm wrong invoice my butt !! lol

Sorry but that looks like a simple typo to me - have a check where your £ sign is on the keyboard. That they had quoted you on the phone and the "revised" invoice was for exactly that amount, identical to the wrong invoice less the "escaped" 3, just makes me more certain. The reverse also happens and I've had people issue invoices for, say, ££48 or even worse ££500 when they should have been £348 or £3500. Surprisingly customers are not so inclined to want those invoices changed!

Due to a claim for lameness investigation when I first had pony, the very next renewal they stated he wasn't covered for any lameness unless caused by external injury, this is NFU.

Horse insurance is a nightmare!!

We are currently worrying that we won't be able to get insurance for new horse due to a couple of claims this year. We have been insured for years and only had large claims in the last year. We pay near on £2000 a year for 2 horses.

I work in Underwriting but for marine insurance and all renewals factor in the loss ratio. Surely horse insurance companies can do the same and if your loss ratio is rubbish, put your premiums up. Equine insurance is slighty different as alot of claims are based around illness etc unlike ships were there is a large human element to claims. for example the master fell asleep whilst in port and bumped the quay.....master negligent, horse breaks its leg in field......act of god?

I can not stand the hassel of equine insurance, at the moment it is creating much upset and worry!

I have BHS insurance and my boys have an ISA that i put the equivilent insurance premium into monthly. I now have £5k at my disposal which would cover all sorts of bills and i dont have to ask anyones permission to spend it either..

SEIB are a pain. They refused to even quote for my horse - he has spavins in both hocks and they wanted me to have a 5 stage vetting (on a 15yo horse??!!!) before they would even consider passing it to their underwriters to decide whether to insure him.

I am with Amtrust Equine, they're great and I will be sticking with them. Give Amtrust a call. They will probably exclude the things you've claimed for already but they are realistic about things and will consider removing exclusions if your vet supports you.

it's illegal for us to mark up insurance cases.

a scan would normally come in above £100 so it sounds like a mistake on the original quote.

Thanks Chestnut Cob - I will Google for more info :)

UPDATE - CALLED SEIB

I phoned SEIB yesterday and the response was very luke-warm. I said I was querying why my horse insurance had been declined, quoting the ref they gave. I was put on hold while the clerk "consulted with her manager", she then came back and said there was no change and they would not be offering me further insurance for this horse.

I then pointed out that I am a loyal customer with several other policies with them and wasn't there a provision to provide for this? Flat reply "no".

I then pointed out to her that as long as SEIB's customers didn't claim, they would be provided with cover but as soon as they made a claim, they were no longer wanted. She said this was not always so but it did happen

I feel an email to WatchDog coming on - someone needs to follow this up! If I had bags of money I could probably do without insurance but I work (full-time) to accommodate my horse-fetish (is this the correct terminology - probably not :o). I just don't like being ripped off

I have been advised to try Equestrian World too - any history out there?

I don't get what there problem is?!?!? I work in insurance (used to be equine) and can't see why they are willing to turn away your good custom for no apparent reason. I'm assuming your horse is still young enough to be insured with them and that's not the issue?

It would be normal to just place exclusions on those conditions you claimed for and still offer insurance for everything else.

I would say s*d them and go elsewhere. Another company will place exclusions for the colic and foot problems but generally (i can't speak for ALL companies!) these will not be exclusions that will remain for ever, especially if the colic was a small bout and didn't result in surgery.

Elbie

I thought this thread had died a natural death! I found a much nicer insurance company who are willing to insure him with the usual exclusions, which I was quite prepared to accept with SEIB but was never given the option.

And this is why I don't have insurance on our 13, we keep money aside for vets bills and if the worst came to the worst may have to make a difficult decision - but then there is no guarantee that an insurance co will pay out anyway. We have always managed to find the money when needed even if it meant paying over a few months til paid off.
