Removed after good point from Lamehorses!

Was just a query about whether to trial bute to find out if growing pain or just being a bit nappy/unwilling - thanks for all the helpful replies!

The vet shouldn't give you bute unless they know what is wrong so you'd have to do a call out and examination, and it doesn't sound like you think anything is actually wrong.

If they don't find anything your insurance has nothing to exclude, and if they do at least your insurance will pay to address it.

I realise you've only given a very brief description but has he been worked much in a saddle without a rider? Lots are humpy because they're just not used to it so I'd be doing a lot of long reining in the saddle with stirrups to ensure he's truly accepted it.

Thank you, I thought that might be the case - I was hopeful to avoid a full work up as I don’t really think it’s warranted. Perhaps I’ll give him the rest of the month off.

I have owned him a year and he’s done extensive groundwork, long reining, walking out in hand etc so I know it’s not that he’s worried about a saddle being on him in general

My vet probably would if he was out for something else and we had an informal chat along the lines of want to see if it's pain or behavioural. However it goes on your bill and on record. So when you come to renew insurers will ask why it was given.

I had some ventipulmin end up under the wrong horse on a bill. Nothing in the history about respiratory issues. I didn't notice as vet have been out to do teeth and jabs for both. However insurer tried to exclude the respiratory system on next renewal until I got the vets to clarify it was for another horse.

ETA I wouldn't do this for an clearly uncomfortable horse but maybe if one was napping or not going forward with no obvious issues.

You could try Devils Claw. I hope it's nothing serious.

This is the thing, he trots up completely sound on a straight line and circle on hard and soft, willing in hand and on lunge with or without saddle, bodyworker/physio/saddle fitter completely happy with him, no pain indicators when doing anything with him, no grumpyness, eating/weeing/pooing/drinking all A-ok. Just this humping that started when the old saddle was uncomfortable and now realising that he has had a growth spurt - problem is, if it is pain somewhere then riding in the new saddle a few times is only going to compound the issue rather than help which is why I was leaning toward trying him on some bute.

I think I would rather do it with something a bit more black and white then devils claw if I am going to give it a go otherwise I'll still be wondering. Thank you, me too!

Devil's claw is pretty black and white, it's banned for use in competition horse because it works

I didn’t know that! Thank you - have ordered some on EBay.

I also think I’m going to walk him in hand, do some ground work and hand grazing in the saddle - try to remove any negative connotations with the saddle for a couple weeks or so.

This isn’t always the case. I’ve known vets suggest a bute trial even without seeing the horse (but after a conversation on the phone) just to see if it makes a difference - if so it would then indicate pain somewhere which would then be investigated. I’ve never used devils claw but guess it’s the same theory.

I'm sorry but this isn't true. It's prescription only and owners shouldn't give it without a vet sayso, but the vet can recommend that it's used to identify a pain reaction before going on to diagnostics of where the pain is coming from.
