As Blue has been out of work for the past couple of weeks i've been concentrating on Merlin a lot more. (Merlin is Welsh D 2yo colt)

These pics are a year old now, he looks much the same now but a bit bigger!

And one of him in his winter woolies

First i decided to make a scary looking thing to put in his field, which consisted of a jump wing with feed bags and carrier bags attached to it using baler twine, the idea was the bags would flap about in the wind and he would then get used to flapping plastic and not be scared of it in the future...

he found it scary for all of 2mins!

Then went back to eating.

Next, i tried a traffic cone plonked in the middle of the field, this also was scary for all of 2mins, once sniffed it was decided it wasn't scary!

Then i took him in the arena and walked him about, we have huge mirrors in our arena and part of them were covered with a blue tarp (to stop birds committing suicide) so as he found his reflection a bit scary

i thought i'd feed him in front of the mirrors and next to the tarp, at first he didn't want to go over to the bucket unless i went with him, but then he decided it wasn't all that bad, was very funny to watch as he would take one mouthful and look at himself in the mirrors and take another mouthful and look at himself and so on!!

He has just about worked out his balance enough for me to pick out all 4 feet now!

He wasn't very good at this, this is the baby who when he was a few months old would get up from lying down rather like a camel, i.e. bum first and then his front!

We have also progressed from a small non scary brown numnah on his back, to a bright red one, to a bigger blue saddlecloth and now we are on to a neck cover, next will be a small fleece rug - am quite pleased with his reactions to these things he looks a little worried but once i have put them on his back and he's had a sniff he is no longer bothered by them.

He has also walked over poles on the ground and hose pipes and watched horses being clipped and loads on the lorry.

Hmm what shall i try next??

Maybe try taking him to some inhand shows for him to see different things.
I have a 2 year old welsh d he is going to his first show next week, he has a sweet itch rug on every day he use to be a nightmare but now he is fine, sees the farrier every 6 weeks. I walk him inbetween tight spaces etc like two jumo wings close together, he has been bitted, he walks over tarpaulin and ties up without misbehaving.
How tall is yours?
Hope this helps

I did think maybe trying some overreach boots on him but haven't managed to find them yet! We don't have brushing boots, but i should be able to find some tendon boots somewhere to try on him?

We can do being tied up, but not tried walking through jump wings or over tarp yet, thats something else to try!

I think he is roughly 14.1hh, though i can't measure him as i have no stick so that is an estimate, am hoping he will make about 15.1hh ? What do you think?

I used to make handy pony courses for my mare
smile.gif
I got funny looked from other liveries when I erected a washing line in the school

but it was great fun
grin.gif
I introduced her to 'water' jumps - obv I didnt make her jump them but made her walk round them, made her walk over tarp, long reined her in her head collar (before I bitted her), took her for walks - everything I could think of

Mines 2 years 2 months and standing at about 14.2hh i am hoping for about 15hh+ his full brother is 15.2hh your should make 15hh welshs are just so slow at growing lol

Handy pony courses? Water jump as in feed bag on the floor kind of thing? Would take him for a walk down the lane but although he's not afraid of cars on the yard i'm not sure what he would make of cars hurtling past him pretty close on the road like some do, thought about maybe taking a car in the arena with him and driving past him in there first?

Ah Merlin's dad is 15.2hh his mum is 14.2hh, his sisters on his mum's side are 15.2hh (though she was put down sadly) and 14.2hh so should get there i hope?

I really must try to get some more recent photographs!!

I will try to get some tomorrow or wednesday evening
