A small showing report.

After realising at our last show that Breagha who only turned 4 officially last month was as calm as you like at a show, I decided to bite the bullet and enter another show. So we went along to the RRC Annual show yesterday and I had entered her in the Ridden Turnout class and also the Novice ridden class.
We have been doing allot of hacking at home and she loves going for a canter out on a hack alongside my OH horse BUT she becomes quite sticky in the school when it comes to canter but she will do it eventually. So I knew that the novice class might have been a bit much for her but it was all a training experience.

First class at 9am was the Ridden Turnout and apart from throwing her head up in the air a bit she just did what I asked and you only need to walk in Turnout but she was well behaved nonetheless. The class was full of greys but Breagha was pulled in 3rd out of 15 (nice feeling knowing that all the elbow grease was noticed lol).

So, after the turnout class I thought I would take her into the warm up arena to see how she coped with other horses warming up apart from one little buck she was perfect and gave me the canters I needed but she was following others in the warm up. I then put her back to the trailer to let her chill in the sun as there was a long wait until our ridden.
Our ridden wasn’t until 1.05pm so jumped back on her about 12.45 and gave her a walk around the show to get her warmed up, I didn’t do too much with her as I was worried she would run out of steam.
So, there was only 5 in our class and we proceeded to go in and were walking around and we have never done a “go around” in more than walk, so was nervous and excited to see what she was going to do but shouldn’t have worried, she got on with the job at hand in the go around, gave me a nice forward trot and a nice canter which got her pulled in initially in 3rd place but as I suspected in the individual show she lacked in confidence and would only give me canter on one rein and started to back off me, so instead on getting on her case too much, we gave a nice trot and ended our individual show. We were then placed 5th out of 5 but I couldn’t have been happier with her as she took it all in her stride and it was nice to know that the judge did like her in the go around.

So, our home work is to improve on her doing things on her own. So, I am going to have to purchase some brave pants to start hacking her on our own but I know she will be fine but not as forward as she is in company and have a lesson tomorrow night and also on Saturday.
Onwards and upwards.

Well done I think you both did really well, it can take them a bit of time to get the confidence on there own at a show but keep practicing and it will come.

Interesting to read, thanks, am planning doing our first show in a couple of weeks, and both of us are complete novices! She looks v smart

Ohhhh, she's a bit gorgeous!!

Thank you :D

She has come on leaps and bounds this year as we only back her slightly at the end of last year and was mostly just walking last year. We didnt up things until this year. We have schooled a handful of times as she prefers hacking at the moment but I just cannot fault her. Although the go around after getting placed her canter was lovely and steady - so I am taking alot of positives away from it all.

Treat it like a training exercise, that is what I am doing at the moment. This was only my 4th ridden showing outing, so im still relatively new at it. So, im taking the good with the bad and enjoying it. Good luck for when it comes :D

Well done and I hope my first outing with baby horse can go half as well I'll be thrilled! Lovely pictures :).

Thanks - I can't actually fault her. when are you taking Skylla out? OH took the pictures on his phone. Hes my groom just now as he hasnt been interested in taking his horse out this year yet.

Possibly taking her out in a couple of weeks  or we have our charity show at the end of July, *notbrickingitatall* :D. It's amazing what good pictures a phone can do, will definitely rope someone in to take pictures of Skylla's first ridden show.

Look forward to your report on it. We have a couple of shows lined up in July and then our EGS show in August. So we will have to work hard on her individual show but again this year is a training year.

I'm sure you'll crack it, just need to have her confidence build :).

To be honest I'm enjoying this year, I have a feeling when Skylla turns 5/6 she is going to be a horror with thinking she knows best AND having the confidence to try and do it her way :D, currently she at least looks to me for reassurance to say its ok ;).
