Morning, just wondering if any of you out there have any tips on stopping my 4 yo with his babyish (non malicious) biting habits, he is definately going through a phase with it. He is at his worst when either bored with no food left (only in the mornings when putting his rugs on...although he tries to do this himself...) or standing on the yard being groomed tacked up etc...again probably bored with no food to chew on....but i'd rather he didn't chew on my jacket, old landrover, stable door, drainpipe, rug, wellies....he is worse than the dog for wanting something to carry around in his mouth....think you get the piccie....thank you x

Mine used to do this.
I didn't find a solution, I just had to keep removing things from his reach or his mouth.
He did eventually grow out of it. Although he is still partial to toggles, boot laces and hunter welly straps!!

(He's 12 this year)!!

I think remove tempation as much as posssible. Mine did it when he came but at 17h he was a bit of a thug with it. I stopped him in a week or 2 (except occasional lapses!) by pulling it out of his mouth and growling at him then if he didnt stop he got a smack. I think that was fair as learnt not to persist past the growling phase quite quickly!

If its something in particular hes partial to, ie door or drainpipe perhaps smear with cribox or mustard until he learns .

I know what you mean, Axey is exactly the same and he's 5 this year. His latest trick is to bite the headcollar as you are putting it on, so instead of it going over his nose it goes in his mouth! It took me ages the other day to put it on as I has to prise it out of his mouth 6 times lol
I can't leave anything in his stable, rugs over the door etc
the other day he went through my entire grooming kit picking things up and throwing them.
I just laugh at him tho, I think he's funny and I'm sure he'll grow out of it one day and become boring

Sure any horse can be stopped if mine can! He was not only allowed to but actually encouraged at old yard!

He picks up water buckets, so owner tied one to door frame for him to play with and in summer put water in it and he would throw it at people! Sure they loved him!!!

Also tied up a lead rein for him to chew when he was in.... consequently he now has one that is chain until half way down!

Good trick he was tought tho was apple bobbing- he goes in up to his eyes! bless!

But seriously- was really bad for picking up stuff and chewing and now I can have all rugs and stuff in his stable. He sometimes throws rubber feed bucket over the door but thats it! Sure he thinks its a subtle hint!

thanks guys, esp, Hollyjz, for the tips, I know a lot of them do do it, but he is a big boy 16.2hh, just don't want him to have a go at me/anyone else!! He can get very close to my backside when i'm grooming him, drying legs etc. They are funny with it, i have to say, if i put his rug change over the stable door, he will bring it over and hold it for me, until i have his other one off!! Don't want to encourage him, so will start practising my growling...oh and buy some of that stuff, good plan!

Know what you mean with the headcollar Seahorse, he knows that trick too, although think he learnt this one from my 29 yo....who still does it!!

My 5yo "kills" her rug if I leave it over her door ~ pulls it off and stamps all over it.

And the same with grooming kit, buckets, haynets etc.

I'm just leaving everything out of her reach, and trying to teach her to be tied up quietly without having to have a full on cabaret to amuse herself with!

This really has made me feel so much better as I thought it was just my monster who removed zip ends etc with great gusto. I'm currently having to walk him out in hand twice a day and if it's not my sleeve in his gob it's the lunge line, trouble is it does make me laugh which I'm sure encourages him so I'm currently pretending to be very annoyed by the whole thing. He has also taken to lifting me up by the back of my belt when I'm skipping out his stable, and he is so ruddy quick it really is diffucult to see him coming, but same as SamuelWhiskers it's not malicious.
