Yesterday I agreed to help a friend take her mare and foal out to a local show. Foal was an accidental foal as a couple of colts were put in the mares paddock at the last yard she was on and she wasn't informed until the mare was well past the 6 month stage. She seems to have lucked out though and the foal was actually rather nice!
foals name is lilly, but she is affectionately known as the gremlin so you can probably imagine what sort of day I was expecting.
Turned up at 7am on sunday morning to find mare and foal still reasonably clean (grey mare, coloured foal living out!) and was amazed when the foal stood like a pro to be plaited and seemed to thoroughly enjoy having her forelock plaited!
Plaited the mare and loaded them into my lorry. Lilly loaded well after a slight hesitation.
Arrived at the show only to find that the mare had poo'd all down one side of Lilly so we had to sponge her off on the show field and hide the green stains with copious amounts of chalk!
She was amazingly well behaved, took the whole experience in her stride. Even the judge said she had never seen one so well behaved!
Came away with a nice Red frilly!
as it was starting to get hot and Lilly was tired we loaded them back up straight after their class (with the help of a lovely lady on the show field) and went home. All safely back in their field before midday.
No more shows planned for her now untill after she is weaned, or may be even next year but her owner was over the moon! it was the mares first show, the fillys first show and the owners first show!
