hi peeps,

Just wondered if any of you had tried this?

I suffer from nervous tension before hacking etc and i have a show coming up also. I suffer from nervous tension (in life in general, not just in horsey situations) I know you get different ones- which one do you think would help me with this?

thanks

I used rescue remedy before my first flight on a plane ( i was REALLY nervous ) and it totally chilled me out , I never needed it again flying... I'm quite a nervous rider but forgot all about it so I might give it another go..

I have the Original spray, the night time spray and the meltlets. I bought them recently because I was stressing about stuff, getting anxious and subsequently unable to sleep. They were recommended to me by colleagues and they helped.

However, I'm generally a sceptic and I can't help but wonder if I calmed down and slept because I thought I'd taken something that would help me, a placebo if you will. I also think the carrier of the essence in the original one probably helps more if you take enough of it (it's brandy!!) ;)

Whether it is just a placebo effect or it works, I use it for showjumping to calm my nerves and it seems to help me out. Doesn't kill all the nerves which is good as you need some...
My friend puts it in her horse's feed if he is stressing and it seems to work...

I use the spray but it doesn't seem to work for me (I spray about 10 drops onto my tongue )
Are the drops any better, as from what I've heard it seems to work for everyone else!!

I use the pastilles from time to time and they work for me - I have to chew about 3 or 4 at once though as eating one doesn't do anything. They take about 5 minutes to work and there is a definate difference in my tension levels after chewing them!

Before I go xc on one of my horses I take them and they calm me right down before take off. I have tried the spray but it didn't seem to make any difference whereas these do - and they taste good too :)

Ah excellent, will try these! Though haven't seen them, will have to search hard!

I've used the spray and the drops and found they work really well...then again I also find a good slug of brandy does the trick too!!:D

the origional bach rescue drops are really effective, i found they were better for shows, exams etc because they didnt make me sleepy like calms tablets do! lol

you can also give them to your horse as a natural calmer! lol

(:

I use the spray, or pastilles whatever is to hand - whenever I feel wobbly about anything - at the moment I use it before hacking out (the roads are getting busier), works for me. What I also do - which I have said before - I use drops of lavender on my body brush and use it on the horse (obviously) being careful not to use on hairless areas (I have an appaloosa) and this calms us both as I get ready to go out (he is entire). Sometimes I put a drop of lavender on my riding gloves as well. If nothing else it keeps headaches at bay.
So with 4 squirts of Rescue Remedy and all the lavender - hey who cares....... I don't know why I worry (age!) cos he is lovely to ride and OK he eyes up any ladies he passes but spring is in the air and he knows that with the saddle on he isn't going to get a leg over! And last weekend I had the most wonderful canter on him - first time out of the field I had asked him and he just went and felt safe and didn't stop (cos he has more stamina than my other fat lazy quarter horse) and slowed when I asked him... wow - best medicine ever. If the Rescue Remedy is a placebo what does it matter if you achieve the end result. ;)

I use an age old natural rememdy called "Port" it's avaliable in many stores and you can get it without prescription, I usually administer it via a "hip flask" although over the colder winter months it can mixed with hot water and taken via a "mug".

:D

I do like rescue rememdy spray, much better for times when I need to focus but for general nerves I like a swig of Port! :D

defo the pastilles, most chemists do them, i prefer the blackcurrant ones they are awful yummy, and yep i agree- take around4 at a time, they worked every time for me and still every now and again pop some lol x

I keep a tin of the pastilles in my tack box! They DEFINITELY work for me (placebo or not, who cares if they work!!)

What I found, too is that after having one before each lesson for a while, I didn't need to have one the next time. I think, while you are 'calmed' and you have a nice lesson, hack or whatever, it will remind your subconscious that it's ok, so next time you won't worry so much (if that makes sense!).

As I am still working up to go on my first hack with Hugo, I will certainly be having one or two when the actual event arrives! :)

My OH also carries them - he is a bit claustrophobic sometimes and it works for him too.

NB try it with your animals: the most conclusive proof I ever saw of rescue remedy has been seeing an almost instant change in a horse and a cat who were both very anxious.

Not sure about the correct doses for animals; but as long as you don't give so much the carrier becomes a problem, its impossible to overdose on the actual remedy itself.
