Back ache

Well I get a pain at the bottom, but thats from a car crash

At the minute its hurting kind of in the middle below my shoulder blades.

if you can do it, rowing. honestly, after just one session on a rowing machine (going fairly gently for 6 mins) i can feel the difference.
for e.g. i always used to collapse in simple changes, and after rowing, my back/core muscles held me even though my shoulders wanted to go forwards - hope that makes sense.
and, if you haven't already had it checked, a visit to a mctimoney chiropractor... until i've been put straight, all the effort and exercises in the world won't stop my back from hurting etc.

I'd go and see someone to get it sorted if I were you. Also, if you sit at a desk all day, make sure you get up and have a stretch about every 30 mins (I know it's hard). Do you have an HR dept you can talk to? The DWP will come out and do an assessment of your workstation and you can get grants towards ergonomic chairs etc, that might help.

adding to jumpthemoon's point, don't, whatever you do, sit with your legs crossed (other than at the ankle), cos it twists your pelvis and can cause a world of pain and trouble...
(advice from my mctimoney chiro, not me!)

If it's hurting, then you really should see someone about it.

I've found yoga and pilates have really helped with my posture and sore back.

I do some exercises 3 times a day which my physio recommended but it's my lumbar which causes me problems, so they may not be helpful for you.

One is where you lie on your front, put your arms under your shoulder, and push up, keeping your pelvis and legs on the ground. Repeat 10 times.
The other one is just to keep my back muscles looser, so I lie on my back, knees up, feet on the ground, and move my knees to the floor on alternate sides. Again, repeat 10 times to each side.

As I was reading that I had my legs crossed! I quickly un crossed them!

Thanks for all your help everyone, I think a lot of it boils down to my car crash, never been the same since. I have been thinking about doing some yoga lately!

Thanks again everyone

Good!
We have a physio and Mctinoney at our yard, I will see if they will have a look at you when you come up if you want xx

Get yourself on a Pilates class...really helped my back no end and concentrates on posture and strengthing your core stomach area.

This is an old classic. Occassionally when I'm shifting around 250kg bales (not quite one on each arm, but they take some shoving), the following morning I have a little twinge, or if I've been in front of the computer too much.

Here's the most effective solution:

Take a medium sized bath towel and warm it up. Then fold in half length ways and the roll it up really tightly. Then find a piece of floor (in front of the telly if you like), lie down and place the roll at the point in the bottom of your back where it curves most. It should feel really comfortable as you lie back. Remember to breathe normally with your stomach and just relax. You should star to feel your spine relaxing and stretching out. Do this for about 20 mins.

You might feel a little stiff afterwards, but that's your spine elongating after the treatment. Do this for a few days and I promise you'll feel 100% better.

Also, don't forget to do some crunchies regularly as a lot of back pain is caused by weak stomach muscles.

Hope that helps,

Ken
