Hi everyone,

I decided to school my mare tonight and found that whenever I asked her to canter on her right leg she would career (sp?) off in a tight circle and her back end would slip under her (she nearly landed on me at one point!). She was perfectly fine on the other leg and didn't seem in any pain, so I was just wondering what could be causing this???

I mentioned this to the YO tonight and she has said she'll come watch me school tomorrow to see if it is something I am doing and if not out will come the vet/back person

Sounds odd - I wonder if it could be partly down to immaturity/lack of schooling, causing her to fall out and then the wrong correction causing her to fall out even more and possibly slip.
Either that, or a physical issue. I'd ask your instructor to view it and then get a physio and/or vet out if in doubt.

I haven't lunged her in a couple of weeks as the weather has been lovely, so I thought I'd make the most of it

I was going to lunge her tomorrow and see how she does without me on her back. Usually she is quite good in canter on the lunge, so this is definately an issue that has appeared recently.

I am absolutely baffled as usually the worst she does is rush a bit!

how old is she? My oldie does this nowadays but always had a tendency to motorbike round the corners which didnt help if he was a bit unbalanced in the first place.

F has done this in the past. The turning turned out to be me

and his back end he still does occasionally, its a novice thing I think

Thanks for everyones comments, I am off down the yard this afternoon so will let everyone know what happens with the YO later.

Am not sure I'm going to ride today as I seem to have jarred my back and its quite stiff today

will definately lunge her though and see how she goes.
