Does anyone use Bach flower remedies, or other herbal/ flower remedies with their horses? I want to encourage my mare to relax when her stablemate leaves her to go riding (currently this results in major tantrums :o) and I was wondering if something like Rescue Remedy could help. I don't expect the remedies to be a magical solution, but wondered if they might help her to relax while I work with her in other ways, like grooming and massaging, etc. She has recently moved yards (with her stablemate) so I know what is causing her to be upset, and I want to help her get back to her usual, calm and balanced self as soon as possible.

I do have quite a few of them, when used I'm not sure if they have made an actual noticable difference or whether the thought of them working makes me calmer which helps the horse?

Also despite having them I often forget to use them anyway :o.

My mare is horribly anxious and hates being left behind. I use rescue remedy for myself and have used it in drinking water on a different horse who was on box rest for a long time. For my mare I have been using essential oil therapy, she self selects but her favourite is vetiver. I dilute it 3 drops in 5ml of veg oil and let her sniff it or lick it off my hands. It has a marked effect on her, she usually wants to lick it! After she's had her oils she stops pacing and although she still looks worried she is much more settled.

I have used them in the past but what has really helped my companion pony settle when I ride my other one is a stable mirror. She's much happier about being left alone now.

I let my horse sniff a few drops of Lavender on my hand once just to see his reaction - he couldn't stop licking my hand and he went all dozey and relaxed! I think I saw a vid on tinternet about oil therapy and letting the horse choose what they seem to need. I only had lavender to hand though, but would be interesting to see what else he would go for.

I have used, for dogs admittedly! Rock rose for stress like fireworks etc and walnut for changes in circumstances etc. both appeared to have beneficial effects. Use Rescue Remedy often for stress. Always worth trying. Good luck

No, just used them for myself. I love the nightime melts they do. Excellent if you can't switch off your mind and go to sleep.

I use them a lot - every day - for myself, hubbie, the dogs, and for Shy if he needs them (not that he ever does really, just when we changed yards he needed walnut ;) ).

I was absolutely gobsmacked today (and cross) - went to get some Rescue Remedy spray for a friend who needs it, and saw they had brought out a little 7 ml spray, in addition to the 20 ml spray. FAB !! If they don't want it, it won't matter.

BUT get this - the 7ml spray was £7.50....the 20ml spray was £9.50. How can they get away with this ? This was at Holland and Barrett. So I bought the 20 ml, and told the manager how wrong that pricing was.

Sorry to rant, now calm.

I thought about a stable mirror Tapir, I think there might even be one in the shed somewhere!

I've bought some Rescue Remedy today, so I'll give that a go and see if it has any effect. Does anyone know if there are any decent books about oil therapy out there?
