My neighbour has a 10 year old girl, with aspergers, and last year I gave her riding lessons on a sweet wee 13.2 pony, I knew the pony as I had had the wee mare when I was around the same age. Sadly she developed cushings and couldn't be ridden, she has been cared for and now back in work woohoo! I am giving my neighbour's daughter first lesson since we stopped last year and was hoping for some pointers. I had her walking, trotting and cantering by herself in a paddock. My plan is to put a stirrup around the ponies neck for something to grab onto and lunge her, should I have a whip or not? I did the usual G.O and N.O kinda activities but I was looking for some fun things to do, should I do trotting poles? Let her do some stirrupless?

To improve her steering, put a load of obstacles around the school, such as jump wings, barrels, buckets or anything you can find just spaced out and spread at random, then you can get her to go left round this, right round that, all the way round the next thing etc. a bit like a course of jumps but without actually jumping! Start at walk and then introduce a bit of trot until she can trot or even canter round a "course".

Dare i suggest (with help at beginnig) such things as "round the world" and "half scissirs" as a kid i loved them and doing round the world with out sliding off made my day. :)

OMG, wow that brings back memories and I'm only 17! Yeah I might try that with her, but maybe when we are in the 2nd lesson, rather than 1st :)

Why not lay out some obstacles like the 'trec' ones? We had great fun playing trec at our recent BHS summer camp, even managed to canter the bending poles! All obstacles can be done in walk, some in trot or even canter if brave!

"trec" whats that? I have 4, 3 ft jump stands that I could use

My daughter is endlessly amused by bending round elec fence posts and moving a single plastic jug from pole to pole.

Other things I have planned are picking up articles from one end and chucking in a bucket at the other.

Dismount and walk along some stepping stones/buckets leading pony then remount.

Making a maze with fence posts she has to ride round without touching etc.

Practicing getting stirrups back you've lost etc

If she hasn't ridden meanwhile, you might have to go back a stage.
