I've been coming on here for a little while now reading posts but this is my first time posting.
I used to ride as a child and had a lovely 13.2 school mistress from when I was 10 till I went to university. Since then I've had 3 children and I've always wanted to start riding again but never had the opportunity.
Recently my girls have started riding a friends pony and through them I came across someone at the same stables wanting to loan their horse out. After riding him a few times I've started to loan him :)
He's a 16.2 ex racer and can be a handful so he's taking a bit of getting used too but there's lots of support on the yard keeping me right with his care and I'm doing a lot of schooling to get my confidence back up and try and teach him that he doesn't need to canter every where (his past loaner was a young girl who apparently only had one pace). He's lovely and very responsive and my riding is improving though Im mainly concentrating on walking, trotting and stopping at the minute :)
Hes in a snaffle with no martingale but does throw his head about a lot, I'm trying to contact his owner to see when his teeth were last checked as I know that can be a cause. Any other suggestions gladly received though.

Well done you . I had a lay off for 12 years then started again by going Autumn hunting and thoroughly enjoyed it .
Won't give any advice I am afraid other than I hope you continue to enjoy it

I can beat that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a 23 year break from riding:eek:

I've had horses for 4 years now - fab rediscovered hobby that gets life back into perspective!!!

Yep, it was a tossup between "Breakinglowerback" and "tenniselbow";) The hip bursitis won out though! lol:D

Haha love that!

OP congrats on getting back in the saddle! I think getting his teeth checked is the first thing you should do and then work from there :) Good luck with him, I'm sure you'll have many happy hours together.

well done. i had a break for 10 years and now have 4 horses! re the head moving some horses have allergies which can cause this. one of mine gets it in summer - think he is allergic to pollen. i give him some global herb stuff which seems to help. but try the teeth check first.

Welcome back OP!

I had a 12 year break too. I ended up with four horses too - but have managed to whittle them down to two now as stepson has grown onto our horses!

I think chatting to the owner first is the best bet. They know the horse best...
