My mare, as a result if a field injury, had two vertebrae crossing (one jutted out slightly overlapping the one in front). Not kissing spine - the vet thought it was the result of an accident rolling in the field. She couldn't back up or turn without pain but could walk forward fine. I had her scanned etc and vet suggested she could be brought back to work following rest - to treat like kissing spine and work long and low. She was 19 so I decided to retire her. She was paddock sound and I had her for another 2 years - lost her following another totally unrelated field injury.
