Been given the go ahead by vet and physio to start bringing Orkan back into work slowly following a series of back treatments under sedation due to him being lame behind only when ridden. He has only really been out of work fully for 3 weeks as prior to that I was lungeing or walking out in hand or riding long and low in walk/trot. Nevertheless, I would say he has been out of hard work since a couple of weeks after I bought him (Mid-End Oct). Bloomin thing injuring himself pratting around the field!

Anyway his last treatment was 14th Dec where I was told to rest him for a week, lunge for a week in walk then ride slowly. However, due to the weather I have been unable to lunge until today (nearly 2 weeks after the 14th). So I should be riding on Monday.... I would normally just lunge for another few days then get on but he was a loon on the lunge today bucking and galloping around so I'm worried he may damage himself again.

In your opinions, would it be ok to walk in hand for a few days then get on and skip the lungeing part of things? Or would anyone just get on and walk gently for short periods of time as he is most sensible when on board?

Thank you I know I am being a worried mummy but I just want to enjoy my new horse and not have him damaging himself in the process.

Sherry/port and mince pies to those who got this far!

Dizz doesn't have a bad back, but she does have a wonky pelvis, so sort of similar.

I'm using the Pesso to help build up muscle

. I don't like to lunge per se, rather I like to walk up and down the school so the horse does some straight lines rather than everything on a circle.

Are you able to free school? Long line?

Put some obstacles out so's ned has something to concentrate on.

Yup - circles are boring and either require a lotof conectration or none at all lol

Well my horse is in a similar situ and i have no menage and the field is just to wet and slippy and unlevel to lunge so i am just going to get on and walk her out for the next couple of weeks i think its much better to have a controlled walk than a mad lunge! Good luck x

Personally I think you're better riding her out in walk than leading her out in walk. Both of which are better than hooning about on the lunge and undoing all the repair work.
