Axel hasn't been ridden for a month as I've been ill in hospital. He's been living out in the field and checked every day.
The other day someone came to look at him re having him on loan while they were riding him he seemed to stumble on one of his hind legs, this was particularly noticeable on a downward transition but he did it while trotting too.
I've owned him since he was a yearling and he's now 8 and he has never had this problem before or even been lame before so I'm quite worried that this has happened now.
His feet are very long but he's being shod on wednesday and they are coming back to see him again.
Is it possible he is just weaker on one leg due to lack of work? I'm hoping it's nothing serious as they are nice people and I don't want to mess them about with a potentially lame horse.
He is completely sound behind but just seems to lose his footing :(

Was he on a surface or was he on uneven ground when he did this? Is he shod behind? Sometimes if they are unshod and sensitive or stand on a stone with a back foot they can do this, its just an ouch my foot rather than anything sinister......also you say his hinds are long, the breakover point will be affected by this making him more likely to trip with his hinds. See if he does it again once he's been trimmed before you start worrying!

Thanks, he was in the school so on a surface, he's worked in there a lot so he's used to it. He is shod all round but his feet have never been this long before (bad mummy!)
I'm pretty sure it's because his feet are very long, but will see tomorrow if he still does it after the farriers been.
