Good Morning All,
My horse is recovering from a fall in the field – it is thought he has twisted and this has resulted in hind lameness on one leg. He is currently under Vet and physio treatment, regular checks etc. I was wondering if anyone has used a “back on track rug” or similar to aid muscle recovery? He is an older gent so I would like to help aid him all I can.
Thanks 

My 17yo who has SI/pelvis issues wears one under his rugs. It definitely helps. He was without it for a few days last month and he was stiffer/slower. I bought another one for my other lad who is stiff on is right hind - under treatment of vet and physio at the moment, problem stems from compensating from long term gut problems - and he now wears it 24/7 too, I'm about to buy him the matching neck cover as he also as a neck issue. Before buying the rugs I had the back warmer and always make sure all of mine would wear it before work. I really like their stuff and would recommend it.

After the neck cover my next purchase will be for me and my achy hips!

Great thread!! I've been thinking of purchasing one but haven't yet justified the expense in my mind. I'm looking forward to reading the responses!

Thanks Scarlett. I have talked to physio and vet - both said what the rugs are meant to do but haven't recommended as such! If it can help him be more comfortable out in the field then to me its well worth it, he is such a super horse and deserves to be a happy OAP :) .

My 23yo has been wearing one since a fortnight after he fell on ice between Christmas and new year. He was so bad that we thought he may have broken his hip/pelvis but thankfully that wasn't the case and it was a bad pull to his hip flexors. He also had Bowen and Scenar plus some bute.

He wears the fleece in his stable at night. He hasn't been without it yet so I couldn't tell you how much it helps him, but you can feel the heat coming back off it so I am sure that in itself is a good thing.

Plus it looks really smart. And I didn't pay for it (lucky me, family members chipped in for my birthday) so if all it ended up being was a really smart fleece, I didn't mind. ;)

thanks DD265 - I think my horse might have done a fall similar to yours. He was VERY lame so much so I thought he has broken his hip! Vet is still not 100% sure of root cause but due to how my horse is reacting thinks its a muscle issue in his hind, He is responding to physio and being in a small turn out pen. Taking it all gently and I am open to all options. Would you mind me asking how long roughly it took to see soundness coming back in the trot? Walk is hugely improving but trot seems to be making baby steps improvement wise! My vet has been great, I send him videos all the time between visits! Typical mad horse owner!!!

We haven't really assessed trot - he had issues before the fall anyway. About 6 weeks in I think we trotted him and actually he wasn't too bad but tired on the sore hip very quickly.

He isn't likely to be a good comparison because he's been mostly retired since 2010 and not worked since last October-ish. He had been having treatments anyway (having been down the veterinary route previously we are more complementary now) but the fall caused us to focus on his back end. He had some long term unevenness in terms of muscle development on the left (under developed, also the one worst affected by the fall) and right (over developed). Now he is fairly well in the back end, we are addressing the front again.

I love my rug. I travel my boy to competitions in his. He also wears it at any stage he can at the event. I am about to buy the leg wraps too.

Yes, I would really like to buy my boy one! I think they're much better than magnetic

I have a BOT mesh rug. I spoke to the distributor about its usage and they told me its use should be built up gradually to a maximum of 12 hours a day for maximum benefit. I was also told to take short breaks from using it to help get the most from it.

That's me started, just two hours last night to start him off and will build it up slowly to him wearing it at night in the stable. I thought I would be helpful to do a sort of blog attempt on it to see if it helps!

I have to say so far it fits very well, I ordered 6ft3 Mesh Rug which is his usual rug size and its a really good depth of rug.

can't speak for the rugs, but my OH suffers from reynauds in his hands and feet and has a pair of their gloves and socks to wear. He finds it's a massive help - they delay the onset, lessen the symptoms and then the episode passes quicker!

that's really interesting. I've got a BOT rug for my mare but never knew if I was helping or if it was just placebo effect for me.
Nice to know that a human can feel the benefit :)

That is really good to know JenHunt, I was worried about it being a "fad" thing but I felt like I should give it a try to give my horse the best chance in his recovery. I am a bit of a sap, and would live in beans on toast for my horse to have "all the gear (nae idea!)"!
Once I am up to a week of him wearing it overnight I will do a progress update!

I've been using my mesh rug at night for 3 weeks now, pony has sacroiliac injury that has been injected 5 weeks ago and again on Monday. No idea of rug is helping as I have so many other factors (muscle disease so added ALCAR and linseed, hock changes so wears magnetic 'bracelet', new calmer, out 24/7) but all vets commented how smart it looks so even if it doesn't help its a nice rug! Trot work restarts in 7 days so I'll be able to tell how he's feeling better then.
