Hiya,

Does anyone have any advice/tips for avoiding back pain when picking out my horses feet? I have suffered lower back pain for as long as I can remember. Recently picking out my horses feet has triggered it off. My mare doesn't lean on me or anything like that - I think it is the action of bending from the waist that is the problem.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

It depends what the cause of your back pain is I find bending my knees slightly helps as it takes the strain from bending at the waist.

It may be worth investing in a back support that you can wear when picking out the feet.

Pilates or Yoga are great for strengthening your back! When you pick out rather than bending over completely, bend your knees to lower yourself and then your back bend isn't so pronounced - it's great for strengthening your thighs, no pain, no gain:D

Have you been to an osteo???
or your GP

I have damaged 3-4-5 lumbar which go into spasms and facet - lock

You need to get this sorted go to your GP they can reffer you to the hospital and x ray.

Failing to do this could lead to.

  1. loads of pain
  2. facet lock
  3. spasms
  4. back going out
  5. slipped disk
  6. sciatica
  7. paralysis

pain killers GP can prescribe is
Co-codamol
Diazepam
voltravol
epidural

I have dengerative problems with my back and picking out feet is also very painful. I find the best way (if your horse is safe/good) is to face the horses side. Bend down on one knee (as if your were proposing!) and rest the horses foot on your leg. That allows you to keep your back straight and stops you taking the weight of the leg with your arms and back. It also means you are using your back less and your arms more to actually pick out the mud.

Exactly how I cope with this! Trial and error over a few years and this seems the only almost bearable way of doing it!:o

If it isn't safe to do this then you can sort of crouch and keep your back a little straighter but take the weight of the foot on your knee as above, this is how I have to do it because of my back. I was out spraying ragwort in a new paddock this morning and I am really paying the price now, because the applicator gun was a little short for my height!

pleased OP get this checked.

MY riding accident was not diagnose by a quacttor( crap doctor)

who gave me pills

then more pills then more pills

in 1981 2 years after accident my back went out .

Osteo said you damage 3-4-5 lumber which are in facet lock and spams. If you had this sorted when u did this you would not have the problems you will get later in life.

How true she was.

  1. 30 times back out
  2. sciatica
  3. almost paralyzed for life from sciatica
  4. . pain
  5. slipped disks .
  6. All this from not getting it properly checked.

even my hand was incorrectly diagnosed injury which has left me with a disability for life.

Go get your back checked, the pain is a warning something is not right.
